Are games these days too easy?

Sorry if there's already a thread based on this, I'm just too lazy to look

Me and SG64 were talking about this when we were talking about NSMBWii's difficulty and it got me thinking...

Anyone feel like games like to hold your hands these days? Think about, games from the NES era were pretty brutal(at least imo), but from the Super Genesis era to the PS2/Xbox/GC era, difficulty was pretty consistent, with most games not being too hard, but not too easy either.
But it just feels like games these days are just too easy, with little games that actually push its difficulty(DKCR, Megaman 9, and the Souls series, too name a few). Hell, even Cliff Bleszinski himself admits that there aren't many challenging games out there.

Do any of you feel the same?

Holding_Y_Panic is an unknown quantity at this point

I definitely feel games now a days are too easy. There is way too much flash and not enough challenge. I mean in Mario if you didn't make that jump then, well then that's it. Skill and timing were absolutely key. Now, if you missed a jump you could freeze time and pull your rocket ship out of your super ultra utility pack. There are games i used to play when i was younger that i am now just beating 15 years later. That in itself speaks volumes......Hopefully, not to my skill level.

If it has a difficulty setting, then the hardest is usually pretty hard. I died a lot playing professional co-op on RE5 even with infinite ammo. If it doesn't have a difficulty setting, then yeah, it's most likely too easy.

On the whole, I definately do think that video games have gotten easier. I mean games like Super Mario Galaxy 2 and NSMBWii and DKC Returns having the "Super Guide" feature to basically beat the level for you, speaks for itself. I wish that the old Contra games had a "Super Guide".

In NSMBWii's case, it's challenging for the wrong reasons because if you're playing with other people you'll be killing your teammates more than killing the enemies.

Even games with difficulty settings, "Hard" in older games I think overall is still harder than "hard" today, in my opinion, more often than not.

I mean, I know that not just nerds play video games anymore, so maybe difficulty had to be toned down for the sake of the broader demographic, but, it also seems like they're starting to somewhat baby kids nowadays with these games.

A lot of games back in the day were hard on purpose so they lasted longer. Nowadays developers do not need to rely on the difficulty to increase a games length!

As opposed to relying on long drawn out stories/collect-a-thons/back-tracking/side quests, etc.?

Not that there is neccessarily anything wrong with these per se, but when games intentionally do it to artificially lengthen the game that's not good either...

I wasn't saying it was a good thing! I was saying that was one of the ways they increased length in a game back then! Of course some games relied on other ways to make games longer like you said, and of course some games were legitimately without any of that!

No need to get flustered, my friend (at least that's what the exclamation points imply), I was just making a counterpoint as all...

I have, but it's only hard because they make enemies do a lot of damage, give bosses ridiculous amounts of health. Don't get me wrong, it is hard and it is fun, but it is nowhere near as hard as most SNES and NES games (particularly Ninja Gaiden for the NES).
