What makes this show so popular?

My brother is in love with spongebob every time its on hes right there sitting in front of the tv viewing the show. I use to watch it awhile back but i lost interest in it. its not really something i should be watching at my age anyways.

It's popular because it's a good show......

Which is what I would say if it we're talking about the first three seasons. The series was supposed to end after the movie(with the creator and most of the original staff leaving to do other things), but Nick got cocky and decided renew the show for another season, and right there is when the shows quality plummeted. Sure there are rare gems like the Handsome Squidward episode or the "Normal" episode, but most of the new episodes are usually mediocre to terribad, and it doesn't help that the majority of the characters are shadows of their former selves(Spongebob and Patrick are dumbed down idiots, Mr. Krabs is still cheap, but with all the charm he had earlier gone, Sandy suddenly being super intelligent out of now where, while her KAY-RA-TAY awesomeness disappears with out a trace, etc.). The new episodes also have little to no variety; how many times are we going to have to see Plankton attempt to steal the Krabby Patty formula for the umpteenth time, or see Mr. Krabs' get-rich-quick schemes fail again, or how many times do we have to see Spongebob/Patrick's bloated stupidity ruin the lives of Squidward and co. And I would love, love to see the moron who thought "A Pal for Gary" was a good idea for an episode. The only reason it's remained popular is because it the only cartoon that Nick ever wants to air

Also "The Best Day Ever" was the most overhyped piece of shit I've seen in a loooooooooong time

The show is popular because it's super funny. Kids and even adults who remember it can't not love it! Me and my friend Amber love the old episodes we remember from our childhood. We even quote them for a laugh whenever the chance arises. We love Spongebob. <3

The new episodes are crap and I don't even watch it anymore. I just youtube old episodes when I feel like watching them again. :3

This, this, a thousand times this. This show used to be rather clever and sophisticated for a children's show. Adults could watch it because it used to have alot of jokes that were meant to go over kid's heads (like how that one guy found the "coin slot" on the female seahorse when he thought she was a ride), and older people could relate to many of the stories like Spongebob having to grow up (Grandma's Kisses), and going on strike at work, etc.

Now, it's like they hired ADHD kids to be the writers.

And I agree that certain central plotlines like Plankton and the Secret Forumla or Spongebob getting his Driver's Liscense need to be solved already. But wait....*SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE*

In the movie, Plankton had successfully stolen the Forumla while Spongebob and Patrick were gone on their quest to retrive Neptune's Crown. He was selling Krabby Patties at the Chum Bucket. He was defeated and sent to jail in the end but he had indeed successfully stolen the Krabby Patty forumla, so why do the episodes after the movie still have him after the forumla when he already knows it now????

Believe it or not, the show is not directly targeted at kids. Much like Adventure Time, its audience is...well, everyone.

Anyway, it used to be funny. The old episodes still are. The newer ones are just stupid.

Also, it annoys me how almost every new episode now is advertised as a "special".

That's pretty much expected if they're willing to give 24-hour marathon for a generic 11 minute episode

Alright, I'm done hating on that episode

Come to think about it, the new episodes feel like a completely different show compare to the first three seasons

Remember that "100 episodes marathon" and how "Karate Island" was supposedly better than "Wet Painters", "Krusty Krab Training Video", "Band Geeks" and "Shanghaied"?

A few of the post-movie episodes were okay, some I would even go as far as saying they were almost even...good, but only a few. That is what it feels like, it feels like a completely different show.

But wait I'm confused on something: Plankton successfully stole the forumla in the movie (he was selling Krabby Patties at the Chum Bucket), yet in the new episodes he's still after it. If he already knows it, why is this??

Retcon.

And yeah, I agree that the older episodes were better.
