14 killed at Dark Knight Rising Screening at Colorado

Quote:
14 Killed at Dark Knight Rises Screening

Suspect in custody; more than 50 wounded.

by Jim Vejvoda
July 20, 2012

A gunman, reportedly masked and dressed in body armor, opened fire today at an early morning screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado, killing 14 and wounding roughly 50. Several children were among the victims, including a 9-year-old girl. Police have the suspect in custody. The gunman is said to be in his 20s.
The Denver Post quotes survivors and witnesses as saying the man entered the theater dressed in body armor and carrying a canister that released gas. Initially, not all audience members realized they were under attack as they believed the sounds of gunfire were part of the movie.
Associated Press reports that the gunman "stood at the front of the theater and fired into the crowd about 12:30 a.m. MDT at a multiplex theater in a mall in Aurora. 'Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire,"Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said at a news conference."
The gunman is not believed to have had any accomplices and no motive for the crime has yet been reported. Police also checked a local apartment searching for explosives, reportedly based on comments made by the suspect, whose identity has not been revealed.
10 victims are said to have died at the theater and four at hospitals. The youngest victim is said to be 6-years-old being treated at Children's Hospital Colorado, where 10 victims were taken.
President Obama released the following statement on the shooting: "Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado. Federal and local law enforcement are still responding, and my Administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time. We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded. As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family. All of us must have the people of Aurora in our thoughts and prayers as they confront the loss of family, friends, and neighbors, and we must stand together with them in the challenging hours and days to come.ople of Aurora in our thoughts and prayers as they confront the loss of family, friends, and neighbors."

My prayers go out to the families of the victims ;_;

I seriously hope the guy responsible get whats coming to him

Heard about this at 6 a.m. on the news when I got home from the midnight premiere. It's bullshit. At the theater I went to for the premiere there was a small child fully decked in a Batman costume, muscle suit and all. He was twirling his cape and staring up in wonder at the cardboard cutout of Batman and Bane in the lobby. What if the shooting was at my theater instead? What if that kid was shot? What if he lived, and was forever scared by witnessing such an event? Nothing can just be good clean fun anymore.

Speaking of children, this is a little quote from my history professor, and he is spot on:

"There are so many things to say, but let's look at a few points:
1- As a society we allow and accept violence in ways we should not. Movies like The Dark Knight (yes, I'm going back to '08) are filled with graphic violence, but somehow are only rated PG-13;
2- We then take these movies and market them to children by putting the toys in stores and Happy Meals;
3- We glorify thugs and disgusting content in music and pop culture;
4- We even let our children watch these movies (for a kindergarten Christmas gift exchange, a child gave my son Spiderman 3... what kind of parent thinks this is an acceptable gift for a 6 yo?)
5- Then we sit back and say it is guns that are the problem, not our societal acceptance and quasi-glorification of violence at every level; but then...
6- We pat ourselves on the back because, hey... at least these kids aren't watching sexual content in these PG-13 movies." - My History Prof.

Yeah, I heard about it. I went to see the movie at a local theater early the next morning and there were a ton of security officers and they made me get my ticket checked 4 times before entering the movie and the theater exits were blocked off. It is definitely a shame, but movies give people ideas, people use those ideas for evil. Perhaps he saw the Dark Knight and got the idea from the first robbery scene and thought it would be awesome to do it during the next movie? I don't know, maybe he just wanted to see the world burn.

Side note, SGC64, I don't blame guns at all. I don't like guns though. Basically, they are dangerous and have the capability to kill people. People say, "Well that won't stop bad people from getting their hands on them..." but with that same logic, we shouldn't go to other countries and ask them to stop nuclear productivity because terrorists will still get their hands on nukes. But it isn't the nukes fault!

I live on a farm. I see guns differently. Guns are a tool. They can be used as weapons, but so can my axe. So can my machete. It's all in the purpose. I'm don't want to have to hurt anyone, but if someone ever breaks into my house, there will be a dead body in my floor and that won't really bother me.

So would you be okay with more restrictions on guns?
