Diddy Kong Racing: A Breed of its Own?

Something had occurred to me recently after watching a very good review on Diddy Kong Racing(Which I'll add to the end of this post). They point out that no other Kart Racer was like it before it. Which begs the question for me, has there been a Kart racer like it since, or even a Racing game like it for that matter?

Think about it, what other game had a story mode? This game was the fortunate (in my opinion) transformation of what was originally planned early, early on to be an RPG or adventure believe it or not. They had the idea for the world, and didn't want to scrap it. They instead transferred the over world into their racing game. Anyways, I don't know about you guys, but I personally loved the story and progression of this game. It was a nice addition, and I'd like to see it brought back. Too bad Donkey Kong Racing had to be cancelled way back when, eh?

Now not only have we not seen a racing game with this kind of story, but we haven't seen a racing game like this that added the variety of being able to use not only a kart, but a plane, and a hovercraft as well. This is an extremely big reason as to why this holds steady as my favourite kart racing game ever, and probably rivals Top Gear 3000 for my favourite racing game of all time.

I just found it interesting, and thought I'd share. Thoughts?

Also check out the review that inspired this, it's quite good (and funny), especially to anyone that knows the masterpiece that is Diddy Kong Racing:

please note that the actual review doesn't actually get going until about 2 minutes in.

The very first Crash Team Racing game on PS1 has a story mode, with an overworld too. Circuit Breakers also has hover boat vehicle things, as well as cars. I'm not sure about planes.

Yeah the story in Diddy Kong Racing is basically the exact same as it is in CTR, although I don't know which came first and I like DKR better overall. I've always liked Diddy Kong Racing better than Mario Kart ever since I started playing it back in third grade, and it's truly a shame it never got a sequel. Instead they just put Diddy Kong in the Mario Kart games, but seriously of all the games that deserve a sequel but never got it this is definately numero uno on my list.

They actually did plan a sequel for it on the GameCube. It was going to be Donkey Kong Racing and you were going to be racing on animals instead of karts but I'm actually glad they scrapped that, I'd much rather have an actual Diddy Kong sequel.

Yeah, I knew about Donkey Kong racing, wish it came out, but not much you can do at this point. Yeah, they did include diddy kong in mario kart, but they didn't even in 7...

Also, cool info on crash guys, thanks for the heads up.

After I played this, Mario Kart 64 seemed hollow.
