Is the rise of texting and social media decreasing the social skills of our youth?

Well, I can't speak for other countries but this seems to be the case here in the states. Well, okay obviously when you are texting and using Facebook you are "socializing" with others, but it feels like it's having a negative stint on people's ability to communicate in-person. Granted, yes shy people have always existed and some people are just naturally more talkative and outgoing than others but doesn't it seem like these new communications have made it worse?

I don't think so.

That's all I will say, whenever I get involved with conversations about todays youth it ends up bad.

I don't think so, but I do think they are less understanding and it is difficult to communicate with them. Like just today, I was having a conversation on a friend's facebook status and this girl comes out of nowhere with accusations. It didn't matter how calm we were or what words we chose, she simply lacked all skills relating to interpretation or understanding.

And Killua, that wouldn't happen if you didn't take everything to heart and apply everything involving the word "youth" or its synonyms to yourself. The reason you get in arguments over that stuff is because when we say "kids" you generalize it and apply it to yourself.

I'm not really talking about their online communication I mean is too much text based communication affecting their ability to communicate in person and basically make us afraid of other people to the point where we feel uncomfortable in person? It's easy to be outspoken and opinionated when you're just a username next to some words on a screen but it seems like it's taking a toll on people's ability to be effective in person communicators now.

Yes. I think texting and communicating through Facebook make our youth have terrible social skills. I was an introverted teen and only communicated effectively though the Internet. Getting older, I got a job and went to college, learning real social skills. I have now become a "bright, outgoing, and charismatic young lady." is what my employers and college professors say about me.

The internet and phones are the worst thing for our youth. As a future teacher, I have come to hate young people using those devices. They don't learn real social skills, and ignore the English language's grammar rules with their "txt tlk" and 133t speak, making it challenging for teachers to get students to have a discussion and instill in them good grammar practices.

I can say this firmly because I have a friend, who could be a lot like me, but she sits behind a computer all day and talks online. She has very poor social skills and rarely leaves her home. When she was in school, she had decent social skills and a circle of friends. Now, she has few friends and has it set in her mind that she's agoraphobic. I've tried to help her go to college and get out of her bubble, but she refuses.

I'm not saying Facebook is all bad, I use it to keep up with friends I don't see on a regular basis. I also text to "talk" with people when it isn't convenient to call. However, I don't think this should be used as a only means of communication with people. Face-to-face is best form of communication, there is little room for misinterpretation when you see the face and hear the way the voice sounds.

You could always do what my old English teacher did and smash phones with a hammer.

I also notice that my sister, who used to be a relatively chatty girl, became super quiet in nature when she got a laptop one Christmas.

I myself am simply introverted by nature but I have a circle of friends and know how to hold a conversation with someone and I enjoy going out. I notice some people are increasingly trapped in their "bubbles" though. And there are more people I who are simply bland when you talk to them.

If they can't speak properly it's obviously because they didn't listen when they were supposed to be learning. If I talk to someone who's bad at communicating, you can usually tell they're thick.

I think it's partly because of the technology. I used to be on the internet as much as possible, basically every waking moment of my life apart from when I was out. I sort of lost along the way, this is also due to things that were happening in my life, how to speak to people. I don't think it should take all the blame though, I was fine before I was about 14 - I used the internet and such years before this.

Can't really speak for much as growing up it was mostly using pagers to get in touch with my friends. I wouldn't really blame technology but more than blame it on the kids who do so as they should very well know the difference between talking to people in a social atmosphere and online such a facebook, texting...ect.

Well either way I don't have a Facebook or Cell phone. I have a tablet that I use to skype with people from this forum and that's it.

SG you're right, (hate to admit it) but yes I do tend to take it to heart when someone says something negative about the youth as a whole. But honestly, half the time it's generalizations. That's why I get so emotionally wrapped up in it, because every where you turn it's "All these kids these days have there fancy technology, and SWAG and YOLO." Ok, I have never met somebody who uses either of those words in a SERIOUS manner. I say them as a joke, along with most other people.
