Are we too rewarding of mediocrity?

In our modern culture, when we do things like give ribbons to kids for "effort" and such, or "10th place trophies". Are we, in a way, teaching them that they don't have to push themselves with our mentality of giving ribbons to every kid or otherwise give them a tangible reward "just for trying"?

could write a whole paragraph about this, but yes, we are. yes, we do. You can argue all day that "Well, if my kid doesn't get a ribbon, he'll get upset!" but that's not enough. Teach your kid to have some balls and accept defeat admirably.

Feel free to write that paragraph. The idea is to get a solid discussion going.

I also have a lot to say, and it reaches outside of people. We reward multiple things that don't deserve it. I'm on my iPod right now and I'm also in class, so I'll edit in more later.

YES. Yessss.

I played softball when I was a child. I hit one sucky home run the whole season. I was an awful softball player. I got a trophy. My parents taught me that I had to work hard and succeed to earn things, and when I got a trophy for playing, I asked my dad: "Why did I get this? We didn't win a single game. I'm not even a good player."

That was my first experience with this sort of thing. Sure, it makes you feel good to get a reward, but it's not good to give rewards if the person didn't do anything to earn it. Life dosen't work that way, but people think that everyone should get something. This is leading to a loss of satisfaction for hard work, and makes people who do over achieve feel as if they don't need to do that to earn any recognition.

Everybody's not a winner. Like SG64 said, some people need to learn to take defeat admirably. I do, but some parents want their kids to be rewarded for a mediocre effort. That shouldn't happen, and won't happen in my classroom. Parents can get mad at me all they want, I won't reward anyone until they actually earn it.

Okaaaay;

First of all, kids. Kids these days are too spoiled. In both reward for their amazing triumph (which is wiping their own arse), or just given a treat every single god day because, hey, they 'deserve' it. Kids, or even teenagers, simply shouldn't be given such praise for doing menial tasks, regardless of how old they are. Not only is it patronising, but it means they grow up to be completely blind and dense to any real life situation and the difficulty of it. No, you're not getting a cupcake for getting to class on time. That kind of stuff is expected. I saw a parent praise their child for picking up a dirty wrapper from the floor. What the hell is good about that? Although to be fair the parent wasn't even paying attention properly and it's highly likely that child is there for the benefits. But regardless, bad parenting is the cause of this crap. And obviously bad teachers. I won't say it's entirely their fault though since they are taught to teach like that. I think it was Frederick Herzberg who said praise is one of the motivators for hard work. This is mainly for actual workers but it still applies to children. However constantly praising for the smallest of things is not the same as giving them praise for a well written essay or a long & hard days work. I wouldn't say this makes people expect things for everything they do, but it would obviously effect how hard they work when it came to getting their first job. If you're thinking, "anyone with a brain would know to work hard", then well done, you're not one of these kids. The kids got this praise because they did their shit task, they went to their parents, and they begged for that praise. They got it, and now they expect it. I'm going to be honest; it isn't the brightest of the kids who do this. If they truly used their own brains efficiently they'd know that this crap doesn't need rewarding. I knew this, I never got handed sweets and games for getting full marks on my primary school maths exam. Sure I thought it was good, but I didn't expect anything. Kids these days need to understand that not everyone is going to give them hand outs, especially those from working class families. It just isn't affordable. In some cases, I believe reward for just attempting/trying is okay. But that's rare.

It's things like Santa that make kids believe they'll get whatever they want. Write a list and he'll bring it to you? No chance. If I ever have kids, I, and their mum, will be the only Santa they ever know of. Why? Because people can't afford to get them everything, and I'll make sure they know that, so they understand that life isn't roses. I don't care how old they are. It's people who say "Oh she's only 6, don't be so harsh", that create the little shits you all so constantly refer to as 'the current generation'. They're treated like babies up until the age of 10 and by then it's too late. I will not discriminate my kids just because of their age. People should not be lied to, should not be treated differently, and certainly shouldn't be patronised because of their age. I guarantee you if at least a good percentage of parents thought like I did, there would be a lot more respect in this world. I'm sick of old people treating all youngsters the same. Especially when there's just as much ignorant people in their generation. The whole 'take take take' thing that is pinned on young people by these old ones is hypocritical and completely down to the selfishness of parents. I actually saw a kid crying to his mother because another child had a chocolate bar and he didn't. He even had a go at the other kid. Why the hell are kids raised like this. Admittedly some can't help it, and the parents are at no fault, but really. At least shut the child up. This is all linked to the expectations of children being too high. And the worst part is when they reach their teenage years. It's weird but this is pretty much the most important part of your life, mainly for deciding what you want to do with the remainder of it. And I can't help but notice so many people ruining it because they aren't being handed degrees or A-levels on a plate. They come out of high school, after finishing the easiest exams they'll ever take (GCSEs), and think that college will be a cakewalk too. They either find it too hard and drop out, or waste tax payers money (at least they do in the UK) and drop out at the end of the year once they've failed. Most of these don't even get a job after dropping out, and the ones that do aren't even putting money into the government. Oh they pay tax you say? You think that means they're helping the economy? No, they aren't. The amount the Government gives to people on incomes below, 30,000 I think, exceeds the amount they pay in, on average. Only people above the 30,000 mark are actually helping their economy. But so many people are being lazy due to this expectation crap and thinking it'll be easy, handing in crap essays, getting a D or a C at A-level and expecting people to start pouring cash onto them. Well no, sorry. You're not getting anymore than you deserve. And that's pretty low.

This next small bit is slightly off topic but it's relevant to the main idea which is rewarding mediocrity too much. It's about video games. I just think that too many games are being rewarding the 80%+ mark these days, and it's getting close to so many being given 90%+. I always thought everything had to be taken into account when rating a game, but obviously it's just bias and series value nowadays.

It's probably because certain parents complained a lot about why their kid should get a trophy since the good players got a trophy. Plus, if I ran a race with 500 people and got 6th place, I want a damn medal.

Where I'm from, I feel like it's a bit underrated. This is coming from a kid in a competitive college prep school, president of choir, and the unofficial president of theatre: the best of talents majority of the time go unnoticed. At least, it's true where I'm from.

Yeah, but what about the person that came in 347th place? He doesn't deserve a medal, not because he is not a valuable human being,but because he did not earn one.

Thanks for your detailed response, Konata and Crayonzz.
By the same token, should kids who are talented have to hide or tone down their talents just to make the others feel better?
