Are gamers these days too entitled?

Something my brother and I were talking about a while ago and I thought I'd be interesting to discuss here.

Do you think gamers this gen. are too entitled, or at least too spoiled?

Well, games these days have mind blowing graphics, voice acting, music and overall presentation compared to what we had before the GameCube/PS2/Xbox era. Whether they were better or not overall is subjective, but there's definitately a higher standard for presentation these days that the generation who began their gaming careers in the last generation or current generation are accustomed to. In a way, it's not their faults per se but I do agree they need to learn to respect the classics.

Yes, very much so. especially the ones who didn't start gaming until this generation of consoles.

It's all subjective. To be fair, some of the games we consider classics these days aren't really all that great when you take off the nostalgia glasses and look at them objectively. Like the original Super Smash Bros. on N64 for one example. At the time, it was the bomb diggity. It was the best we had at the time. Nowadays, we have Brawl. Yes us "old timers" get mad when these kids in 6th grade and below diss the original Smash Bros, but when you play it nowadays, it just kinda sucks when you turn off nostalgia vision. Sentimental attachment removed, there's no reason to play this game over Brawl. However, it's important to respect it for starting the franchise. By the same token, 15 years from now we'll probably have Smash Bros 5 or 6 and it will blow Brawl out the water.

The games of today that we consider the classics of tomorrow will probably get laughed at and dissed by the kids 15 years in the future because they'll probably have technology to make our Xbox 360's and PS3's and Wii U's look like toys, while the "spoiled kids" who grew up in this gen of gaming defend them from ridicule.

The production values of games continue to increase and I'm sure we haven't even hit the pinnacle. It's all about taking sentimental nostalgia out of the equation and looking at the games objectively for what they really are in the present, despite what they may have been in the past. Yes, it's very important to respect certain classics for what they did and how they revolutionized the industry, if they did. But I don't feel the need to worship them anymore.

This is coming from someone who started his gaming career in the 90's with a Super Nintendo. Even I gotta admit this "the new stuff sucks, classics forever!" thing people tend to have about them is getting a little old, even when it come to music and movies. There is plenty of good entertainment now and plenty of bad/boring entertainment back then. As such, it should be taken on a case-by-case basis.

tldr; yes kids these days feel a bit too entitled but old school gamers are also stubborn and it's all about looking at the game objectively and remove sentimental nostalgia.

Only because there parents pay obnoxious prices for new games when the kid doesn't even need it yet. If nobody bought games at release we could all save so much money.

Not saying that it is not, but the new gen (as GB said) has all these new technology at their grasps and might see Ocarina Of Time and say "thats dumb and old, i will not play it". Of course, later on i would grab my replica of the master sword (no, i dont have one, i want one) and proced to cut of his head.
The point being, you cannot blame them a GB said but it is true

in other words....I agree with GB

notsag2d is an unknown quantity at this point

Yes they are.. to some extend.
But then again, weren't we also "spoiled" in our generation? I mean, I was born in the 90'.. and by that time the first thing I recall playing was battlecity on the family computer. But there were even older consoles... I mean just look at wikipedia's list of videogame consoles (google it, I can't post links yet)

I haven't played Atari, Commodore, neither I have played all those second generation video game consoles... I guess you can't blame anyone for this. What's important is that the true gamer respects the classics and by that I mean playing them -perhaps when they grow up.

For what is worth, I think it is our mission to make them understand what our gaming experience was. Just like Ol' Cranky Kong once said (DKC):
"All graphics, and no gameplay, they say!
Back in my day, we used to have REAL gameplay... We didn't have any of this fancy 3D stuff!"
