So why didn't the GameCube ultimately do well?

GameCube was one of my favorite consoles as a kid and it isn't until relatively recently that I learned it didn't do so well. Besides hosting the masterpiece Super Smash Bros. Melee I understand it kind of flopped? I'm just curious as to theories on why.

It was a bit overpriced at launch. A lot of people bought the PS2 because it doubled as a relatively cheap DVD player, not to mention its great library of games. Like always, Nintendo didn't have very strong 3rd party support that drew the crowds to the Gamecube, the PS2 did, however. Though they seem to be rectifying that with the Wii U. Hopefully. A lot of developers didn't want to make games on the GC's small proprietary discs too, if I'm not mistaken.

It wasn't the console itself that was bad, just Nintendo's policies at the time, and well, going up against the PS2 that made its sales less than stellar. The same could be said with the N64 too, what with its cartridges and all during the switch to CD/DVDs.

It didn't have a DVD player and barely utilized online gaming(PSOv1/2/3 and I believe Animal Crossing were the only games that had it, though there might be more). Both of which were the biggest selling points for the Xbox and PS2

Yeah, I think it launched at 200.

Online play was a part of it too, yeah. It only had around 4 or 5 games that supported it.

Er...can I please edit the topic title into something legible?

The GameCube didn't do as good as the other systems because Xbox incited the FPS craze with Halo, and PS2 had a huge library. Gamecube had great games, but a smaller library and not a lot of "adult" games.

It was late. Everyone already had a PS2 and the only reason to get a GameCube was if you were already a Nintendo fan.

Actually the only games that used the online capabilities were the Phantasy Star games. There was a hack for Double Dash known as the Warp Pipe Project which made it online. Animal Crossing had no online play, but you could trade with players online via a code system.

BluePenMan will become famous soon enough

Smilie Waluigi

There seem to be many reasons why the Gamecube did poorly. To name a few:
Hardware: For a lot of gamers, graphic capabilities are a big selling point for a lot of games. If you're going to be playing this game, you want it to look nice. While the Gamecube had arguable better graphical capabilities than the PS2, it was much worse in this regard than the XBOX.

Aesthetics: Let's face, the purple cube is just funny looking. Hard to take this thing seriously when it looks like a garish paperweight.

3rd Party Support: Looking at my gamecube library, about 90% of the games I still own are Nintendo exclusives. Also, I don't recall there being many FPSs for this console, which for some reason is the only type of game most people want to play these days.

The discs: These things were (and even more so today) a joke. While the PS2 and XBOX had actual CDs, Nintendo was running its games off of like, micro CDs.

Lack of online play: Online gaming was a novelty in those days, and was a HUGE selling point for both the PS2 and Xbox. Darn shame that Nintendo still doesn't seem to get that.

But still, despite all of these, the Gamecube is still one of my favorite platforms. Looking at my current library:
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Super Mario Sunshine
Pikmin 1 and 2
Mario Golf Toadstool Tour
Zelda Wind Waker and Zelda Twilight Princess
Metroid Prime 1 and 2
Tales of Symphonia
Time Splitters 2
Sonic Adventure 2

Every single one of those is a classic. The number of games I would consider classics on the Wii can be counted on one hand.
