Mother/Earthbound rerelease hinted

Quote:
EarthBound Creator Teases ‘Republication’
“This has to do with making Mother playable.”
by Andrew Goldfarb DECEMBER 20, 2012

EarthBound creator Shigesato Itoi has teased a potential re-release of games in the series. According to a translation from EarthBound Central, Itoi posted the following on Twitter: “Since it’s now okay to blurt this out, here goes: the ‘Mother republication’ thing I mentioned briefly before is making progress. It’s not Mother 4 though! This has to do with making Mother playable. I can’t give out any details just yet, but I do at least need to say that it isn’t 4.”

Mother, of course, is the name of the EarthBound series in Japan, and EarthBound Central notes that Itoi is referring to the entire series when he says Mother, rather than to the first entry specifically. The site also notes that by saying “playable,” Itoi is referring to the fact that the games are hard to come by and out of print rather than implying that they were bad or unplayable to start.

It’s unclear exactly what Itoi is referring to, as making the original games more readily available could include anything from a Virtual Console release to a release for DS. A collection of the first Mother games (including Mother 2, which became EarthBound in the West) was released for Game Boy Advance in Japan in 2003 but never saw a release in other territories. Mother 3 was released in Japan in 2006.

For now, EarthBound fans will have to keep waiting, but it’s certainly nice to get a glimmer of hope for a re-release, isn’t it?

If memory serves, Itoi had expressed interest in bringing Mother 3 to the States not too long ago.

So this could be really huge. Fingers crossed.

Great news! Hopefully this means a 3DS or DS game card with all three games.

Better late than never I guess.

Extremely late.
Even though I've already played and beaten them on Emulators.

I will say this about Mother 3: you haven't really played that game until you've played it on actual Game Boy Advance hardware. Otherwise there's going to be display lag, and the rhythm attacks in battle are going to be ruined.

I'm naughty enough to have purchased a GBA flash cartridge for just this purpose, but we won't go into that.

There is no rule against discussion of hacks, emulators, or any of that here.

For the most part I don't either, but in the case of games like the Mother series I did. They are so rare to find, as well as crazy expensive on the occassion where you get lucky enough to find it. Classic or not, I'm afraid I'm not shelling out 200 for one video game. Especially an SNES one, masterpiece or not.
