Why are so many people confused about Wii U

I have had countless people say "I don't want to spend that much on a controller for my Wii". I have also heard many people say "I'm not gonna pay that much for a controller and system when I can just buy the Wii U gamepad for my wii".

Why do people think it works this way? Also, my cousin said at Christmas lunch today "Isn't the Wii U a Nintendo tablet?" and I had t explain to him to that it was the successor to the Wii, and the tablet was the controller.

I don't get it. Why are people so confused?

People get misinformed from his/her friends mostly. They don't read very often about Wii U's details info from reliable sources websites (official Nintendo websites) or any gaming magazines.

Poor advertising, there was no real good commercialing for it on television so people who aren't in the know never fully understand it.

Poor advertising plus the name makes it sound like it's only an add-on, especially since it's not uncommon for people to assume so much based on names

It's probably because of the name for the most part. Wii U doesn't exactly sound like the all new next Nintendo console. To be fair, Zero can see how, to someone who doesn't keep up with the industry, Wii U can sound like an accessory. We all know what it is because pretty we're all hardcore gamers here. They can't change the name of it at this point, but Zero agree's they could help the situation with better, more informative advertising.

It's exactly what's being said above: poor advertisement and marketing. Let's face facts that their marketing sucks; it's been this way since the mid 2000s. But when a company is so piss-poor at the job that they can't adequately come out and say 'X model is totally different than Y model and here's why', there is a major problem. But that's not the biggest factor in this

The fact that the system is named the Wii U and not something completely different also hurt them in differentiating the system from the predecessor. But even that's not the biggest factor, but that sure as hell not helping the system.

"But when Nintendo released the Super Nintendo, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance, they had no problem!"

Because Nintendo was showing you the new console front-and-center. In Wii U advertising, this is understated. In print advertising and promotional pictures, they have the GamePad leaning against the console, dominating over it like a moddle-schooler would rest their arm on a second-grader whose soiled himself at the sight of the upperclassmen.

It's like they're ashamed of even showing off the new console, instead opting to show the new controller.

And this works for the most part when you're advertising something as simple as new play control, like what Microsoft did for Kinect. But when you're advertising a new console, heavy emphasis on thw controller over what everything else the system does is a big no-no.

And that's where we find Nintendo: simply overlooking a way to market the system as a whole and marketing only the controller, where many are still in the mindset of Kinect-like advertising and therefore thinking that it's merely a control upgrade for the Wii.

My cousin's wife was asking me questions about it yesterday, and at the end of the 10-minute conversation, she only just realised it wasn't a portable handheld.

Also:
Wii Sports
Wii Fit
Wii Music
WiiWare
Wii U

It sounds more like a game than a new console.

Zeedief is an unknown quantity at this point

I think it's mostly the name Wii U, it has Wii at the beginning, and Nintendo in the past has mostly made their home consoles with different names.

I can kinda understand why people would get confused by that.

Yeah, this is the first time since NES and SNES that the console has had a similar name.
