Paper Mario Sticker Star

Who else has this game? I got it for Christmas from my sister, and ho-lee crap it's blowing me away. I really love the feel of this game. It's different, and it's while it sucks there are no partners other than Kersti, the strategy of gathering stickers and using them as attacks really adds that extra depth to the game.

You and Rai are the only 2 people who have anything positive about the game to me. I'm scared to even try it, honestly.

With any game you're apprehensive about, obviously if you go in expecting it's going to be bad, you're gonna think it's a bad game.

I'm not even sure how I went into this. I just started it up and BAM, the game starts. There's little exposition in the intro, it just kinda tells you what's going on, and then it's presented with little narration what's going on.

But since it shows you what's going down, it's not like you're completely in the dark about the plot. And directly after the opening, you're off doing your thing by saving Toads scattered about the first town, Decalburg, learning the ins and outs of the game as you do so.

So unlike the other Paper Mario games, it doesn't needlessly hold your hand through lines and lines of dialogue, which I think is nice. Mario RPGs seemed to have prided themselves on being different, especially Paper Mario. The need to endlessly drone on about a plot in a game series as lively as Mario is jarring.

That's not to say Paper Mario is without script, because it still packs witty dialogue and such.

As for battle, like I said, it's different. But in a good way. You got stickers instead of your normal jump and hammer attacks, and instead of equpping badges to do different jump and hammer attacks, they're instead presented as stickers as well. So things like Multibounce in the other PM games is now the Hopslipper sticker. And while you're without partner, you also get the ability to do more than one attack thanks to the battle spinner, a sort of roulette that, if you match more than one icon, you get more than one attack a turn. I haven't really fancied myself up to the idea of gambling coins on more moves, but we'll see how it plays out in the end.

So yeah, consider this my mini-review of the game. I think it's aces so far.

Honestly I just ignore what other people say about games these days. I've played games with average ratings under 60% and people constantly told me how bad it was, and I enjoyed them. I'm expecting Sticker Star to be awesome.

I loved how the overworld is spread out on a world map ala Super Mario World, and the chapters sorted like a Mario platformer, with World 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, and 1-4 being the whole of Chapter 1.

And it was really interesting to see multiple paths open up immediately after Decalburg.

I gotta say, when I was prepping to buy this game, I didn't read any reviews of it, or hear any opinions of it, just so I could have a completely untainted experience playing it.

But I didn't like it. The thing I loved most about the old Paper Mario games was the story. Not the overarching story, but the fact that each Chapter felt like a whole new game. Each Chapter was complex, full of character and charm, included a unique story, and gave you a cool new character to use as a partner. The RPG and puzzle-solving gameplay was amazing, especially for a children's game, characters were memorable, and because of the dialogue and the exploration aspects, they actually gave you insight into how the Mushroom Kingdom functions and interacts.

That was the expectation I went in with when I started playing Sticker Star. But I was disappointed on every front. The game just felt like a regular Mario game, but with a slight turn-based RPG flavour. There was very little story, very few memorable characters (to be honest, I can only remember Wiggler, who was a relatively dull character in general), and the only time where you think the developers were trying something unique (the stickers), you realise that the old "items" category fulfilled the exact same purpose.

That's not to say it's a bad game. It's just a bad Paper Mario game.
I'm gonna go play TTYD.

I will admt that the lack of story is kind of irksome, but I'm of the mind that the story of the last PM game or so kinda got overbearing with the story. I understand thar Paper Mario is an RPG, and without a story you can't really give it high marks as an RPG. But even still, as a Mario game, the story kinda got a bit overbearing with its later installments.

I haven't gotten completely far in Sticker Star, but I can tell the story is setting up its main characters, and so far I'm pleased with it. I'm beginnig to tell that Bowser Jr. is filling in a role somewhat like Junior Troopa from PM64; likewise Kamek is filling in for Kammy Koopa, just without that wild grandma kind of feel to the character.

Lamentably, though, I'm beginning to miss the partners, but like I said, I haven't gotten far in SS, so maybe Kersti will shape up to be a good ally.

I'm really digging Sticker Star, though, and I feel like it is worthy of the Paper Mario name.

Just thought I'd input with you.

I'll agree that SPM had a pretty weird and inaccessible storyline, and to be honest it's probably the weakest in terms of gameplay too. But that's why I was so excited to see that Nintendo had brought the franchise back to the basics. Little did I know, they brought it back to the most basic as it could possibly get.

I just feel like they shouldn't have watered down the experience or rebooted the franchise just for the sake of those who are used to the traditional Mario games. And while I did admittedly finish the game, I can't think of a single thing that this game does better than the first two (let's just pretend SPM doesn't exist).
