While the timeline of the Legend of Zelda games is still heavily debated by fans, the stories in and of themselves are pretty self-contained. In other words, each story is completely independent and thus you can start with whatever game you want, you don't need to worry that you won't understand it if you haven't played the others.

As far as GameCube Zeldas go, Twilight Princess was absolutely amazing and I get the feeling it would give you the best impression of the franchise if you started there.

If you can snag Ocarina of Time: Master Quest, then get that. Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are good too. Neither of them are really connected story wise.

I really want to agree with you, but I don't.

A Link to the Past should be the first 2D game to play.

If there's a Zelda game that should be played first, it's Ocarina of Time. The story was the first to really give us a big explanation to the history of Hyrule, so the newer players aren't completely lost in the lore and terminology of the series, and the gameplay still works in today's age even if it's 15 years old. It has a Goldilocks feel to the overworld and exploring it: it's not too large, not too small. It plays safely in the middle and it pays off.

If you were wanting something similar in the GCN games, Wind Waker is closer to OoT's formula than Twilight Princess. Twilight Princess is great, don't get me wrong, but it did things on a lesser scale than OoT. Exploration was still there, but once you combed Hyrule of its secrets, there wasn't much to do. The gameplay was less innovative than OoT, and to an extent WW, but that's not a bad thing.

Wind Waker just felt like it had more to do, despite being hampered by the sailing mechanic. The ocean was wide and vast, and each square on that map had some secret or item to it, so going off the beaten path always had some reward to it. The gameplay followed the same path as OoT and TP, but the parry system introduced newer moves swordplay, and some moves were revisted or used wholesale in TP. Stealth was introduced well, and it actually seemed pretty well done, although it wasn't used often.

Just my two cents.

What about Four Swords Adventures? That was a great GC Zelda. And if you wanna start on one I'd start with the original, it's on the collectors disc for GC.

Yeah I forgot about that, if you can snag the collectors edition. It comes with a bunch of Zeldas.
