ouch Is Nintendo neglecting their fans?

I just have to come out and say that I feel rather disillusioned with them at the moment. Are they really focusing too hard on the casual market and neglecting us?

4-5 years ago, I would've said yes. Consider, though, just how much content they've given to the Nintendo faithful. Sure, some of them were imperfect, like Metroid Other M, but some were simply fantastic, like Skyward Sword and Donkey Kong Country Returns, while others were innovative in their design, like Kirby's Epic Yarn.

Instead of going through a list of what they have given us, let me share what they wouldn't have done if they continued with the casual-centric mentaility:

  • They would not have announced Pikmin 3
  • They would not have developed Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
  • They would not have released Fire Emblem: Awakening stateside
  • They would not have released NSMB2 nor NSMBU
  • They would have released Wii Fit U alongside the Wii U instead of Nintendo Land
  • The Wii Vitality Sensor would have been for sale
  • They would not have re-released Super Mario All-Stars for Mario's 25th Anniversary
  • They would not have produced the Symphony of the Goddesses tour for The Legend of Zelda's 25th Anniversary
  • They would not have developed Donkey Kong Country Returns
  • They would not have developed Super Mario Galaxy 2
Most of these are matters of opinion, but when you think back to when they focused on the casual market a few years ago, and apply that mindset in a what-if scenario, do these really sound farfetched?

Nintendo hasn't really operated on a scale of casuals > hardcore in a while. They may be equal, though I'm inclined to say they're trying to please their fanbase before pleasing the casual market.

If they are neglecting their fans, at least they're not as bad as Capcom

Then again, if they were again, neglecting their fans, they wouldn't have gave in to Operation Rainfall(even if they never released Pandora's Tower)

They've been on a good track, all they need to do is release the new Starfox or F-Zero, which I expect soon

UPDATE: SPOKE TOO SOON

They have really stepped up their game with the 3DS and Wii U.

I agree wholeheartedly with Nintenduendo with this. By breathing fresh air into old franchises like Kid Icarus (however mediocre the game was), Nintendo is definitely demonstrating that they want to give back to their fans. The time I really took notice of this was when they revealed the 3DS Ambassador Program for all of us who bought the 3DS early in its lifespan. That was just a big 'thank you'.

Yeah things like Pikmin & Fire Emblem wouldn't be made if they were neglecting their fans. It isn't as if the typical Wii-family-user will buy either of those.

Paper Mario Sticker Star is the only time I can think that they delivered to their casual audiences rather than the hardcore fans of the franchise, but it is still a pretty good game.

I don't disagree, as you can tell the gameplay is simplified enough to say that it's catered more towards the casual audience. Yet there's still a bit of meat for the Paper Mario fan to sink their teeth into.

Still, I agree with your point.

I recall having a conversation like this before. My issue is if Nintendo doesn't feel up to developing certain games. If a developer doesn't want to develop something, the product will most likely not fair as well. Probably why we have yet to see a new Mother/Earthbound or a spiritual successor to Star Fox 64(similar gameplay without on-foot gameplay).

Well, nowadays, they're putting my worries to rest with the amount of games they're talking about releasing. So, hu-friggin-zzah!~! : DD

I think you've hit on something about developers not releasing a game due if it'd be a risk. And really, that tactic is a smart move in today's market. If Nintendo tried to please everyone, released all these games despite warning signs that it may not sell, then obviously they're going to be at a loss with these games. And if you have, say, 10 games that you release that moves next to no units, then you're going to be in the hole, fast.

And being in the hole is nowhere you wanna be, especially as a game company. THQ is going through a massive bankruptcy based on the failure of uDraw, and that's just one little peripheral. Activision and EA cannibalized the music game genre when they flooded the market with tons of Guitar Hero and Rock Band games. Nintendo themselves have faced losses in the past couple years, though it hasn't been bad enough to where they're facing a loss of development divisions or bankruptcy, at least not yet.

With that in mind, you begin to understand why Nintendo's been rather tepid about releasing a new F-Zero or StarFox. Looking at the sales records for F-Zero GX, it's kind of hard to see what the issue is in the US market, considering it makes up nearly 63% of the games sales, according to VGChartz. However, the Euro market drummed up around 18% of of sales, while the Japanese market showed around 16%. It's nearly the same story for StarFox: Assault; US garnered about 62% of that games' sales, while the Euro and Japanese market drummed up sales around the mid-teens in their markets.

While these games may sell well in a certain market, what has to be understood is that the game has to be a good enough seller in all markets, or else they'll be faced with a loss with them. And like I said, a loss is a no-no.

Though I think Nintendo's trying to garner interest in them. The rerelease of Star Fox 64 on the 3DS shows an attempt at garnering some interest in the series. In another, albeit rather understated way, Nintendo included an F-Zero minigame in Nintendo Land, possibly to gather interest in that series.

As far as Mother goes, it's an interesting little duck. Development on further Mother games would be up to the series creator, Shigesato Itoi, however he has said in the past that he would not make a Mother 4, though if someone else wanted to make it, he'd like to see it like the rest of us: as a gamer.

And really, I applaud Nintendo's decision to not make a 4th game. The story of the Mother games was told in three games, and that's how Itoi thought it should be. I think that Nintendo thinks that if they continued to make new Mother games, then they'd just water down all the great things that made Mother great in the first place. And when you get into things like that, you begin to lose the magic of the series altogether.

It's about staying true to what makes something special, and making sure that nothing comes along to destroy that special-ness about it.

Heh. Special-ness. I punned. I PUNNED RIGHT THERE.
