How can we fix welfare?

What do you think can be done to fix the broken welfare system? though it is difficult to get on the program, it can be easily abused once you are accepted and start receiving benefits. I think they should come up with a way to monitor what is bought with welfare money as well as food stamps, or perhaps prohibit stores from selling certain items to people who will paying for said item using welfare money or food stamps.

I think your suggestions definitely should be implemented, but to what extent, I can't really say. The problems with Welfare extend beyond the program itself and represent the a much bigger problem within the United States government: too much bureaucracy. Pretty much every single one of our social programs are mismanaged and there's hardly any oversight beyond the initial process. Fixing it, unfortunately, is very hard because of how much bureaucracy there is, it's a vicious cycle. The solution is pretty simple: streamline the process to apply, conduct background checks on the people that apply, specify and maintain what the money can be used for (no gambling, strip clubs, etc.), and audit specific people who exhibit suspicious habits.

I think they should develop something similar to an EBT card with direct deposit. Every month, the money gets deposited onto the card, and you can use it to buy whatever you'd like (that's permitted). This way, the government can keep track of who buys what and can easier conduct audits for people who spend the money on gambling and expensive items. Only allow a certain amount to be withdrawn every month so that way the money doesn't get abused as easily. I don't know how well it would work, but it is a start. It can't get much worse than it is right now.

Welfare in America is like AIDS. You can't fix it.

I'm serious, by the way. Not trolling.

In order to have an intelligent debate one must provide evidence for his or her claims. I'm not saying that the notion that welfare is broken is wrong, but I'd like to hear your reasoning.

Well for one, I know of a family on the system who has 6 kids, and they get spoiled with toys and NDS', stuff like that all the time. The father spends money on cigarettes all the time, doesn't work even though he can. They can afford all this even though they are capable of working and there ARE jobs out there, but why work when they're better off on welfare? That's why it's broken.

Edit; I remember watching interviews not too long ago where people on welfare openly admitted that getting a job would give them less income than welfare. What the US needs is the living wage, not welfare.

Ok, so such cases exist. It's clear that people abuse the system. That's a good starting point.

The important question, though, is what percentage of welfare recipients are abusers of the system? Is it a high enough percentage to consider the system "broken"? What percentage would that be?

The only thing I can say is that in my particular area, abuse of welfare is widespread. I have a friend who works at a grocery store and can confirm that half the stuff they buy with their welfare are unnecessary items or "luxury" foods.

I agree. I live in the same area and see the abuse everywhere...like people buying candy and games with that money. I don't think it can be "fixed" though.

And now even more programs are offering free services, expanding the benefits of welfare far from food stamps and money. Like the free cell phone service? 'Obama-Phones'?
