Favorite series as a kid vs favorite series now

What was your favorite series when you were 10 or 12 or whatever? What is your favorite now? How similar are they? What is you opinion on your former favorite?

As a kid, my favorite was Final Fantasy, in particular 7 and 9. I liked the stories and the characters most of all.

Now, my favorite series is Zelda. I guess they're somewhat similar sine they're both fantasy games. Zelda makes up more of its own stuff while Final Fantasy tends to borrow more from myth (until recently anyway). I still love to play Final Fantasy games that are not MMO's and do not have XIII in the title, though.

I guess Pokemon Silver would be runner up for favorite, but I was more talking about console games when I made the thread.

Back then, my favorite was probably Pokemon. Now it's Metroid. Two radically different series. I still like Pokemon and all, but it's not as enthralling as it used to be to me.

That's so hard to remember. I can imagine at one point during my childhood it was Crash Bandicoot, but around 12/13 I think it was Pikmin. It's BioShock now. In a way you could say that it's because I've grown up but LOL no, Pikmin & Crash are still amazing, I just love BioShock way too much.

Little Mac was my favorite when I was a little kid.

Currently, I'm not sure as there are too many favorite characters series.

One of the first video games I got into was Kingdom Hearts, and up until 2006 or so, it was undoubtedly my favorite little series of games. I was enamored with the games, and until Kingdom Hearts II came out, I was dying to know what happened next. There were a lot of plot lines left hanging in both KH1 and CoM. What happened to Riku and King Mickey during the year Sora slept after CoM? Who was Ansem, and why exactly was he so dead-set on conquering the worlds through darkness? What did the mysterious Organization want, and who was the incredibly tricky Axel?

It was really a golden age for the budding series, as speculation went rampant. I especially remember the speculation of trying to figure out who the Blonde Haired Kid was in KH2, though it later turned out to be Roxas.

Nowadays, though, The Legend of Zelda has become my favorite series. I love the gameplay, the characters, the music, and most of all, the story. There's a deep chronology that runs all throughout the series, and through that there are many callbacks and references to earlier games in the series.

And while Kingdom Hearts tries to do this, one little thing that separates it from The Legend of Zelda is the mystery behind the stories and the lore. With each Zelda game, you're given another piece of the timeline, an intricate puzzle that most of the time leaves you with more questions about the grand scheme of things than answers.

For example, Wind Waker reveals that the Great Sea was the aftermath of the goddesses flooding Hyrule so that Ganondorf couldn't take it for his own. The question becomes how did Ganondorf break from his seal to begin with, and what events transpired leading up to the flooding of Hyrule? Twilight Princess reveals that there was a race of magic users who sought control of the Sacred Realm, and that they became the Twili race found in the alternate dimension known as the Twilight Realm. Speculation runs rampant on the identity of the magic users, and there's even more speculation saying that they're tied to Majora and Majora's Mask.

With Kingdom Hearts, every little plot thread has half a game's storyline to it. 358/2 Days explains, in part, where Riku and Mickey was during the year Sora slept, as well as giving a glimpse at who the members of Organization XIII were. Coded is especially maddening, as the whole game seems to hinge on what King Mickey wrote to Sora, Riku and Kairi in the ending of KH2. Just when there's one good bit of speculation about something, they have to make sure that its referenced heavily in the games, if not the main plot point of a game.

It's this lack of mystery that KH loses its depth of storytelling, paling in comparison to the Legend of Zelda. You just can't get engrossed in a story that just hands out every little bit of info like free samples at a supermarket. In my eyes, good storytelling comes from finding little plot points that just deepen the overall storyline, even if they're irrelevant. And it's this scavenger hunt that's different for everyone. "Yeah," one might say, "I knew that theory about Rauru being Kaebora Gaebora in OoT, but did you hear the one that the Sheikah tribe are the same as the Twili in TP?"

That's how I feel about the two series. KH is fun, but The Legend of Zelda, to me, is like a fine wine; it gets better with age.

Alot of the series I admired as a kid i still like too this day. Sonic (Which as a kid I obsessed over), Mario and Zelda where the ones I liked all through grade school - mid high school. My favorite series that I play most of to this day are Pokemon, which I only recently got into, and Zelda. So not alot changed, tbh, except I'm less obsessed with Sonic.

When I was younger I loved all things Super Mario, I would have to say that was my favorite. But then, I did not own a non-Nintendo system before '09. Now that I have expanded my gaming horizons, I am being opened up to many franchises. I do no think I can even pick one favorite franchise, now.

I thought for sure you'd say F-Zero.
