Question Voter Supression Laws

So yeah, don't ask me how, but I ended up picking "Voter Suppression Laws" as my topic for a research paper I have to do for my Civics Writing class. It was a topic of importance and interest to me, so I thought it would be a good idea. I found a bunch of good info, and even made a survey to get data to put into my paper.

I know that people of this site are from all over the world, but these laws affect most of the U.S. I was wondering if anyone has heard of these laws, and if you could offer your opinion on them. Even if you are not from the U.S., if you have anything to offer, please tell me! I can use your opinions as data for my paper. I won't ask you the questions on my survey, because they are mostly directed to citizens of my town (which isn't very promising, most of these people don't care about anything but who Nikki Minaj is dating, but we'll see...)

So please offer your opinion of you have one. Here is a summary of several bills that were the subject of hearings at Capitol Square this week. They may be helpful to you so you won't have to look them up.

§ Senate Bill 1256, proposed by Sen. Mark Obenshain, R-Harrisonburg. It would require voters to present a photo ID at the polls.

§ SB 1077, also by Obenshain. It would allow the State Board of Elections to use the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements Program to verify the citizenship of voters. SAVE contains citizenship and immigration status information of people in the U.S.

§ SB 723, introduced by Sen. Charles Carrico Sr., R-Galax. In presidential elections, it would allocate the commonwealth’s electoral votes by congressional district. (Currently, all of Virginia’s electoral votes go to the presidential candidate who carries the state.)

§ House Bill 1788, by Delegate Rob Bell, R-Charlottesville. Under this measure, Virginians must provide identification and proof of citizenship when they register to vote, as well as identification when they go to the polls. The ID must include the person’s name, date of birth and a photo.

Funny, we just watched a documentary about this subject in my English class today. Apparently these two brothers, the Koch brothers are behind all this in a bid for takeover.

I disagree with the proposal.

Personally I think the ID one sounds good on paper, but not practical. If they were to say, send you a little card before every voting season, that you had to show for verification, than I could see that being probable. For instance, I voted this past election for myself, and my father, as he was busy at the hospital he works at, so he sent me his votes to go do it for him.

Huh, I didn't think of that, but that is a good idea. Ill be sure to mention that. I will credit you in the paper, of course.
Some people like the ID law, but I don't agree. Like you said, its not practical. I think your idea of the card is a valid solution instead of IDs. Thanks for the input! ^^

This immediately reminded me of the civil rights movement during 1945 - 1968 because I'm doing that for history; in the south they had laws preventing African Americans from voting but Johnson's 1965 Voting Acts basically put a stop to that. Not like you probably don't already know :P

I also think the ID one isn't practical. I don't really agree with proposals Like that, but then again I don't live in the US.

Doing my surveys, I found a vast majority of middle-aged people (like between 40-60 years old) think it's a good idea to I.D. people at the polls. Most younger people (30 and under) disagree. Very interesting. :3

You know, I have to provide history of my issue in the paper, and you just reminded me of a good way to bring in history of the issue! I could talk about those "voter suppression" laws against African Americans, and use that to back up my point that laws like these are never good. Thanks!

I really think these laws are socioeconomically and racially motivated to suppress people who would normally vote Democrat. Notice how whenever these types of bills are introduced, it's always by a Republican? Republicans would benefit greatly if poor people and minorities couldn't vote, that's why they constantly try to make bills that require government ID in order to vote. You already have to be a citizen in order to vote in the United States, and the only thing you should ever need in order to vote is proof of residence to show that you are eligible to vote in the state you live in. That's it. The fact Republicans are so bent on passing these laws is akin to imposing literacy tests and poll taxes to ensure that lower-class citizens can't exercise their rights. And people want to act like we're living in a post-racism United States. How funny.

I agree with you. I don't side with either party, but I see where you are coming from. That's one point I want to argue, that these laws are the same as the ones in the past with the literacy tests and taxes, nothing good will come from it.

Sorry for double posting, but I wanna share this...

This be my blog. Like it on Facebook, share it, comment on it, DO SOMETHING.

I get 20 points extra credit on the paper this blog is based upon if I can get at least 40 people to interact with it. I want those points. For those of you that don't know, 20 points will bring my grade up almost a full letter. Meaning, if I get a B, it will be bumped up to an A.

I appreciate your support! :3
While you're at it, it may even help you learn a thing or two about the voter laws that may or may not affect you. ^_^
