"Media Will Not Inherently Rot Your Brain"

This is actually a short paper I wrote for English class. We have to right these little short argumentive papers every week. It's due tonight, and I just finished it up. I thought the denizens of NFF might enjoy this one.
__________________________________________________ _______________

It seems like some parent, usually an ignorant one, is always saying “TV will rot your brain!” or “video games will rot your brain”, or even “comics will rot your brain”. It’s a cliché often seen in movies, but it has its basis in truth. I have to say that while it is possible that exposing yourself to certain types of these medias for prolonged periods of time may in fact have some negative effect on you, that is rarely the case. I am a comic reader and a gamer myself, and Nintendo raised me better than any parent could. I also have an IQ in the superior range, despite spending much of my free time in front of a screen.

I’ll be the first to admit I’m a biased party when it comes to this argument, but I’m a biased party with proof that he is correct. Even as a child, I was much more fascinated by the History, Discovery and Animal Planet networks than most my age probably were. I think you’d be hard pressed to convince someone that watching a documentary on the hierarchal order of a lion pride is going to make them dumber. To think that something as simple as a circuit board encased in plastic could make someone less intelligent is absurd.

There is proof, however, that certain programs will lower the watchers IQ after prolonged exposure. A study conducted by an Austrian college showed slightly reduced IQ scores in volunteers who were made to watch shows such as “Jersey Shore” and “Teen Mom”. In fact, several of the shows used in the experiment were reality shows. In other words, watching and idolizing stupid people does indeed make you stupid. I do not think that is sufficient enough evidence to make such a bold claim as “Television rots your brain”.

As for other media types, they are just as innocent. I’d have to say that if I weren’t learning terminology from Final Fantasy and Pokémon as a kid, my vocabulary probably would not be as expansive as it has become. However, just as watching Animal Planet is not equal to watching Jersey Shore, neither is playing a tactical fantasy game equal to playing Grand Theft Auto. There are definitely video games that are far from intelligent in their design and storylines, but to blame the whole industry for the blunder of a few and then slap a “rots your brain” slogan on it would be pure ignorance.

The moral of this story is to monitor your children and be involved in what they are exposed to. Your son’s Nintendo is not going to lower his test scores unless he’s playing it instead of doing his homework. Your nephew’s fanatical reading of “Batman: Arkham Asylum” is not going to cause him to speak slurred broken English. It all comes down to what forms of the media the person is interested in becomes exposed to, not the actual form of media. If an Austrian college’s experiment is of any merit, however, you might want to use those parental controls to ban Snooki’s Snooki from your home.

Pretty decent.

Sweeping generalisation (stereotyping), is bad for arguments. Might also be Ad hominen.

This is ambiguous; unclear, and is a normative statement, as it cannot be measured.

Just an assumption.

The majority of this is assumptions, and using just yourself as an example is hasty generalisation, I think. Insufficient evidence, and you on your own cannot represent the entire population.

Austrian college; not credible as there is no way to know their expertise, reputation, or if they have a bias or vested interest themselves. Also looks like a bias attack on shows you don't particularly like yourself (no evidence to all reality show contestants being stupid, or that watching them means you idolize them).

I got lazy but I still read the last two paragraphs. I just thought I'd "mark" your work even though I'm not a teacher, since you did share it and I needed practice for that class. Even though I did it for Crit rather than English. It's good, though, hope you don't mind. I don't know if anything I mentioned would effect an English mark.

Kie and crit. Wish I could find things that easily in arguments.

Cool argument, I was never taught to argue a point by using words such as "I". It's interesting how English is taught in different places, but I suppose it depends what type of English you go into.

I agree with Konata's statements for the most part, but you did offer a pretty good insight into the topic. For most professional essays, you should stay away from using "you" or "I". I'm not sure what your teacher's requirements are, but I am seldom allowed to do that in my papers.
