Super Mario Bros. 2

So I have been on this retro gaming kick lately and playing Super Mario All-Stars on my SNES. Revisiting Super Mario Bros. 2 is very interesting. I was never really fond of this game as a little kid, but now that I replay it I can sort of appreciate it more for being different. I'm guessing people didn't really like it too much since Super Mario Bros. 3 is much more identical to the first game.

What does NFF think about this one?

We don't like SMB3 because it was similar to SMB. We like it because it's awesome game. Regardless though, SMB2 will always be the oddball. Everyone else who I've talked to seems pretty indifferent about it

I think he meant that people were expecting something more similar to SMB when they bought SMB2, so when SMB3 was closer to SMB, they immediately "preferred" it, without taking into account whether the gameplay was better or not. It was, though.

It's still better than Lost Levels, which felt like a rom hack(and a mediocre one at that)

I don't have a problem with SMB2 being different. The problem I have with SMB2 is that it just feels floaty and loose in both gameplay and in level structure. I love how there's no time limit on things, but the levels just feel kinda sloppy, in my opinion.

That being said, I like the option to play as four different characters, and I thought the soundtrack was rather well done.

The reason super mario bros 2 feels like a much different game is because it is a different game. It is actually a game called doki doki panic. The real super mario bros 2 was released in japan only (the lost levels). The american test market thought that game was to hard for our children here in the usa, so they hacked doki doki panic and called it mario 2...

Its a good game, but will always be the black sheep. Much like zelda 2 is

If anybody wants to see just google mario 2 japan. I was going to post a pic, but i cant post links yet

Yeah I know about the whole Super Mario 2 situation and how we really got Doki Doki panic because the real Mario Bros. 2 was too difficult for us stupid Americans lol.

The thing about Lost Levels is that its difficulty seems to stem more from things that are realistically difficult to overcome, like gaps that are so wide they are virtually impossible. Like Megas said it feels more like a Super Mario Bros. rom hack, so I guess I can see why they did that.

Nintendo does seem to have a thing with the number 2. Zelda II is the black sheep of the original games, Metroid Prime 2, Mario Bros. 2. Hm...

Nintendo didn't really know how to handle sequels back then. Now it seems like that's all they know how to do.
