FF7, FF8, or FF9?

When it comes to the PlayStation Final Fantasy games, there is quite a bit of controversy. Final Fantasy 7 has tons of fans, but also tons of haters that either hated it for "destroying the franchise" or because they like to call FF7 fans faggots. Final Fantasy 8 is possibly the most hated and loved in the franchise, and Final Fantasy 9...well, it gets ignored, and that makes people like me rage. So where do you stand when it comes to PS1 Final Fantasy entries?

I'm going to tell the story of how I became a Final Fantasy fan in the first place. You may or may not remember, but back in the late 90's, Pizza Hut started giving out Playstation demo discs with every personal pan pizza. Lucky for me I ate personal pan pizza more than children should. One of these demo discs contained a portion of Final Fantasy VIII. It started with the scene of Squall entering the battlefield via the beach, and ended after the boss fight with the giant thing on top of the tower. I thought it was cool, and asked my grandmother for the game. I woke up one morning, and there were 2 games for me on the kitchen table. One was a paltformer called Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, but the other was Final Fantasy VII. Apparently my grandmother either was not good with roman numerals, or they didn't have VIII so she compensated. I fell in love with Final Fantasy VII, even though a lot of the subject matter went right over my 10 year old head. This was actually my first real RPG other than Pokemon. Needless to say, it hold a place in my heart just because of that. I don't think FF7 deserves the hate it gets, but I do also hate all the obsessive love it gets.

As for Final Fantasy VIII, I didn't actually play a non-demo version until I was 18. I didn't really care for it much. It was ok and everything, but I never never made it off the first disc, and it's still just kind of sitting on my shelf like "PLAY ME PLEASE?!"

Final Fantasy IX, on the other hand is my favorite. I didn't even know it had come out because back then I didn't keep up with that sort of thing. I was in Wal Mart and there it was - another Final Fantasy game. I purchased it without a second thought. I think I was 12? I got home and tore into that clear wrapper like a madman. To my disdain, the game kept freezing during the opening cutscene. I took out the disc and examined it. I have no idea how this happened to a brand new sealed game, but it looked like someone had taken a damn chainsaw to the back of it. I Looked at the other discs, and they were just as bad. Wal Mart would not take the game back, because it had already been opened. I was super sad, but when I got home, I tried it one more time and by some miracle, it worked. I found the world to be beautiful, the characters to be amazing, and overall the game had a charm that 7 and 8 didn't have. Final Fantasy 9 is without a doubt my favorite.

VIII, I have too many fond memories for me not to pick it. It was what made me a Final Fantasy fan on top of the fact that it has both my favorite character(Laguna) and my favorite moments(just about the entire 2nd disc) in the series

FF8 for me as well. I liked its junction system and the musics were just what I really wanted. I hunted every single of secret guardians forces in this game.

This is my perspective on the Final Fantasy series:
I never once played a Final Fantasy game in my life, until, shortly after Christmas this year, In which I bought Final Fantasy VII. The reason I wanted to get it, was because right after watching Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, (Which is a brilliant movie, btw), I wanted to finally see what it was actually about, since I've heard so damn much about Final Fantasy over the years. Especially with Seven. I already knew most of the character's names, and I partially knew what to expect, story wise. So when I bought the game, it was exhilarating to finally see what all of this hype was about. And my god, it's amazing.
I can't say much about the rest of the series. I partially dislike Six. But I'm very quick to shun games, And I only got to play Final Hallway XIII for a brief time,so its hard to say.
But, to answer the question, Final Fantasy VII Is my favorite, It has brilliant art, brilliant story, likable, connectable characters, and brilliant music and art design (HOWEVER all of them seem to have brilliant art and music).
But being an avid Manga / anime fan, I like alot of which most FFVII... ugh... "haters", dislike.
In other words the Giant Swords and anime hairstyles are what people dislike about final fantasy 7 up, And that's what I DON'T like about Final Fantasy VI and down.
Soo that's why I never get caught up in other people's opinions, especially one's as erratic as Final Fantasy's fanbase.

And THAT... is why I like Bumblebee's goodnight everybody.

FFVII all the way.

I like FFVII a lot!! Great game.
I dislike FFVIII because I didn't find the RPG elements that be that great. Grinding levels was kind of useless in this game.
I've haven't played a lot of FFIX but I already find it better than FFIX.

For me, you can't go wrong with FFVII.

Out of the three I still stand by FF VII. It had so much cool stuff to do. The Golden Saucer was great. I love an rpg with a "Battle Arena" type thing. The materia system was awesome! You could mix and match endless combos to suit each character and they also replenished themselves. They kept the game simple and exciting.

A close second was VIII. The Triple Triad is one of the coolest mini games I've ever seen! Being able to bond more and more with your choice of summon creature was also a terrific addition. Not to mention you could summon them as much as you want to for free. The junction system took a little getting used to though.

FF IX really ticked me off in some aspects. First off, the card game sucked ass in my opinion. The rules changed, and the cards didn't serve much of a purpose at all. I liked the fact that the cards in FF VIII actually served a cool purpose. Also, having the Eidolons divided between 2 characters meant that you must have the 2 in your party to have the choice of all of them in battle. That really stuck in my craw. In all fairness though, the Chocobo treasure hunt was pretty cool.

When it's all said and done, FF VII was the one of three that had everything I love in an rpg. I was happy with every aspect of the game. No complaints about anything to do with it.

I've only got through disc 1 of VIII & IX, so my ratings may be skewered.

VII > IX > VIII
