Eidos President: Nextbox uses Watermarked Discs

Eidos President: Next Xbox Uses Watermarked Discs

Sony revealed its next-gen plans a week ago, with the announcement of the PlayStation 4. At the event, the company took a step to alleviate players' fears that used-game sales would be blocked. Microsoft may be going a different route.

MCV India spoke with Eidos' life president Ian Livingstone about the possibility of a digital-only gaming landscape. First, he addressed the plain fact that broadband Internet hasn't yet reached an install base high enough to justify getting rid of disc-based media wholesale. Then things got interesting.

“With the next Xbox, you supposedly have to have an internet connection, and the discs are watermarked, whereby once played on one console it won’t play on another," Livingston said. "So I think the generation after that will be digital-only.”

If true, that could change the way console players look at games. Would games be playable on a set number of systems before they stopped working? Would used gaming be a thing of the past? Would it be suicide for Microsoft to try and take on this approach unilaterally? It certainly isn't the first time we've heard rumblings about this watermarking strategy.

Microsoft supposedly is hosting an event this spring where the company will be talking about its next-gen plans. This isn't the kind of subject that executives like to discuss when they're unveiling a new console, but if Livingstone's right you can expect to see executives squirming and dodging the subject in interviews within a few months.

I just read about this earlier this morning.
If this is true, Microsoft is committing suicide as one of the Titans of the game industry. Everybody will be on PS4 if this happens. Hopefully for their sake they are smarter than that.

The greed at Microsoft keeps on growing. I can tell you there will never be an Xbox in my future.

That thing about having no offline mode is also a dealbreaker. If this is all actually true, they cannot possibly think they will be successful. This must be their way of retiring from the console race...

You can still play offline I think you just need to have an internet connection so they can register the game on your console, or something like that. It still sucks and I probably won't get one.

as much as I have enjoyed my 360, I will not be buying their next console. Of course, I have no plans to buy a PS4 either - it looks pretty unimpressive so far. I think my Wii U will suffice for the next generation. I might get a PS3 once they're dime a dozen.

Let me put this in perspective: Diablo 3 for PS4 can play in offline mode, and the system doesn't seem to require online play to register games or anything. The controller still looks very standard and traditional, aside from the touch pad and lack of start and select buttons.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is rumored to have watermarked discs that, when registered online, means that you can only play that game on that console and nothing else. Given that the games require an online connection just to register, than it's probably save to assume that the whole console will require a constant connection, and if that's the case, there's $50-$60 dollars for a membership to Xbox Live, provided they keep their subscription based online model in place. Not to mention there's talks that the system is Kinect-based, if not Kinect-only.

Knowing all that, who do you think will win the console race? It will not be Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony; no, the real winner will be IBM. *rimshot*

The sad thing is that many little kids have Xbox 360s, And a lot of them may not realise how bad this is, so they might ask for the next console from their parents. A lot of parents have no clue, to my observation, about video games these days. A lot of kids just take their parents around game shops and hand them things, and the parent will just buy it no questions asked.
This isn't all of the kids or parents of course, just around here many of the kids who go around like this are under 10, lacking experience in gaming and lacking common sense. I was the same, to be fair.

In my hometown, during the sixth generation of consoles, the Gamecube and PS2 reigned supreme, while the Xbox collected dust in the corner. I would be so, so happy if we were left with just PS4 and WiiU.
