Backwards Compatibility

What's your view on it?

The reason I've brought this up is because of the recent hate on the PS4 regarding it not playing PS3 games. People had been playing systems that only played one type of game (it's own) for 20 years or so before the PS2 came out and offered backwards compatibility. In fact, it was the only current console that offered it until the 360, Wii, & DS came out. So if you think about it, it's pretty recent, and you have to ask the question - would there be backwards compatibility at all right now if Sony hadn't started it all off again.

The Wii could easily have backwards compatibility because the GCN & Wii discs were similar to each other, so it wasn't expensive to sort it out for the Wii. However with the Wii U, it would be too expensive for it to play both GCN & Wii games, so Nintendo fans are actually lucky that they still went for at least Wii games. With the PS4 though, we know Sony like to go overboard with hardware advancements, so the PS4 system is very different to the PS3. Yes, it's true that Sony will most likely want people to keep buying PS3s, but that doesn't change the fact that it would be extremely expensive for them to fit PS3 compatibility in there. It'd also hurt the design of the PS4. Why do you think the original PS3 was such a beast in size? It's not like they can just put a PS3 disc reader in there; there needs to be compatible processors, drivers, all that stuff.

To summarise - while it seems like a necessity, it's only been around for just over a decade, and less than that for all 3 of the current consoles. If you want to play N64 games (without emulation), you need to buy an N64. That kind of motto might become common place, because I have doubts about a successor to the 360 being backwards compatible, and the same goes for whatever follows the Wii U & 3DS.

I think more people are upset that it won't transfer your PSN data than the backwards compatibility itself.

Personally I think BC is a perk. A perk that I absolutely love, but still a perk.

I think at most they should make it a limited time thing just like the Wii where once they got far enough into the generation, they can remove BC and allow price to go down. I love BC but if they have to take it out to make it more affordable, then so be it

Yeah the data thing does suck a lot. & I agree that it's a perk, people shouldn't expect it all the time.

I also agree that it's a perk.

While it is a bit of a disappointment that there isn't any for the PS4, it's understandable for Sony not to implement it if it's expensive. Hopefully more people will realise that rather than jumping to conclusions, like I can see a lot of people (who don't read up on these things) doing.

I think backwards compatibility is important. It widens the library for the console, and gives people who may be new to gaming or who missed out on past titles an opportunity to play them.

I still have most of my old systems, so a console not having backwards compatibility isn't too much of a problem for me. I do like having it though.

Zero doesn't really care about backwards compatibility. Perhaps Zero is lucky, but every console he has ever owned (and there are many) has never stopped working, with the exception of the PS2. And it was really no sweat to simply purchase another one. Consoles get so cheap over time...just hit up eBay or Amazon and buy a used one in good condition if you need to.

The PSN fiasco is very disheartening, though. Did anyone even see this coming? Even as someone who only bought digital games if that were the only way those particular titles were available, Zero still may very well never buy another one again after this. The upside to this, however, is that it may shun people from buying digital, which means physical video games may stick around a lot longer.

I think I'm more for modern-day technicians to create old-school style consoles as powerful as the previous ones were. Like, say Nintendo gave the producing rights of the N64 to somebody they could trust. They could recreate N64's and possibly give it better quality to games. That way, we don't have to deal with stuff like PSN, Virtual Console, Xbox Live Arcade, emulation, extinction of classic consoles, backwards compatibility, etc.

Of course, this is just an idea. Not a perfect one, I bet.
