How would you feel if gaming went 100% digital?

With services like Steam, and games on demand on consoles now, you have to wonder how much longer retail games will be around. What's your opinion on it, and how would you feel if retail copies of games ceased to exist?

I'd be kind of pissed. I am a collector, and I love looking over at my shelf full of games. I love looking at the disc/cartridge, and reading the manual, looking at the artwork. You can argue that these things are ultimately pointless; that they have no bearing on how good or bad a game is, and that's very true. I'd still hate to see retail copies go the way of the dinosaur.

I'd be worried, while being a collector as well, I enjoy seeing a shelf full of games, but my biggest concern would be that it would mean you may not own your games. There'd be a chance that if your cloud provider goes under you could potentially lose all of your games. I have quite a few games on Steam, but if Vlave ever went under(which I don't expect for a while), I would end up losing them all.

There's also a chance they they remove the items you purchase from the shop, and depending on how reliable your cloud provider is, it may jepordize your purchases. For example, iTunes no longer has the Gurren Lagann in the shop, yet I can still download the episode I bought. Sure it may not be as big of a big problem, but I would hate people removing content from the shops, and not all sources would be reliable.

The only pro I could see would be that some game may come cheaper

I would be very upset, for a multitude of reasons.

1) Like you fellas above, I am a collector, so not having something to stack on a shelf would suck.

2) That would eliminate the pre-owned market, and then I would not be able to afford most games. I've always gotten the most bang out my buck by buying used. Unless they lower the price on games, I probably wouldn't be buying.

3) I enjoy going to game stores just because it's nice to get out of the house sometimes and at game stores you can meet and mingle with other people into the same hobby.

4) Digital is not always the most reliable. God forbid if the memory on the console has something happen to it, you would have to re-buy the game since memory cards are mostly a thing of the past on new consoles.

I really can't think of a reason why doing this would benefit the consumer. Only the producers.

If it's anything like the PSN service, limiting the amount of times that you could send the game too your friend, I would hate it. ****, I already dislike the idea of it, because, despite as much games I have on my PS3 hard drive, I much prefer owning a physical copy. Especially for collectors purposes. If a game is on the hard drive only, there isn't much too hold on too, I find. No artwork, no manual, nothing. In my opinion, digital download would be best kept for HD remakes.

...I'd probably stop gaming. If I don't have a physical copy, I just feel like it's something that I can just download illegally. If I'm paying for it, I wanna be able to hold it. Just my opinion.

I'd be cool with it. So far my experience with owning digital copies of games have been sublime, and if this is the way gaming is headed, then I'm confident it'll be a future worth seeing.

I agree with Rai. If you pay for it, you should be able to hold it. Collecting certainly isn't pointless, it's a form of entertainment just as much as playing the game itself is. I'd be pretty disappointed if they stop making disc/cartridge games. Although if it were to happen, I'd probably just buy older games instead, and build up my collection that way.
