Bad Reviews

Recently I've been getting seriously annoyed with the amount of misleading reviews on movies, games, and anime. I honestly think the world is getting less and less educated over time. It's as if loads of people are lacking common sense completely and can't seem to grasp the concept of pretty much anything.

A few examples of bad reviews;
The new Sim City - rated 1 star out of 5 on the review, because EA screwed up with it's DRM thing. I feel sorry for Maxis who developed a damn good game.

Heart of the Swarm - rated 2/5 on the review for "only adding 7 units". If you play RTS games, you'll know that makes a hell of a lot of a difference during matches, not to mention it's got a whole new campaign too.

Bioshock Infinite - 60% (while this isn't very bad, it's bad in comparison to the next lowest of 89%.) for being different to the previous Bioshock games. So they wanted the same game?

A recent movie, Mama - rated 1/5 for having an unrealistic ending. It's a supernatural horror, what the hell is going to be realistic about it?

The Walking Dead Survival Instinct - 75%. Probably the highest rating I've seen this game get so far. Why? Apparently it's good how the zombies act randomly, sometimes attacking even when you're quiet, or ignoring you completely while you run around them. There was me thinking that was known as bad AI.

All of those reviews have misleading ratings and information. It's horrible how places like metacritic even count them. They're terrible. While everyone is entitled to an opinion - some opinions are misinformed, and that's what makes people uneducated.

I remember Aliens Colonial Marines getting a 9/10 on EGM, which is pretty ridiculous considering what everyone else gave it

I basically just use reviews to get an idea of what my expectations of a game should be, but often times I will still give it a chance.

Too bad so many people let these big name gaming sites make their decision for them.

Half of it is money. Devs and producers can line the journalists' and critics' pockets with money to embellish a review for their game. On the flip side, some critics could just look to spread a negative review to get some publicity, even if it's bad publicity. If your site is gettin traffic for a negative opinion, you've already won.

SimCity does suck because Maxis didn't back down from the DRM claims; in fact, predictably, they acted as a figerpuppet for EA throughout most of the scandal. EA is crap, they ruined Maxis, and SimCity suffered for it.

Reviews are just opinions. when I review a game, I'm not trying to sell it to you. I could give a shit less if you buy the game or not, I'm just voicing my thoughts on it. it's all a matter of personal taste. Movie reviews are the same way - there are some awesome movies that get 2 and 3 stars.

I'll admit that I'm guilty of this. A lot of the reviews I write for the magazine that I work for are sponsored. And that's not because I want some extra money; it's because the magazine often has advertisements in it, and it would be 'damaging' to our sponsors if we said something contrary to the ad. Specifically, we can't say anything bad about Ubisoft, and can't give any of their games less than 80%. It's terrible, and I pass up the opportunity whenever I can, but that's business for you.

Some people view these new games as great when they are really just average at best. Many people who write reviews are from a generation that demands more out of a game. I can talk for many of us when i say we are tired of the half finished games. Games that have a glitch because production was rushed. And games that look great, but lack any real depth or challenge. Its just getting old. It looks like some of the frustration may be showing up in reviews? I dont know, because i dont read reviews for most of this new garbage. And im way past done blowing my money on poor games and consoles that burn out after a year of heavy play.

I think you're confusing nostalgia with 'demanding more from a game'. Exactly what are you demanding from a game that hasn't been done already? Games today have near-lifelike graphics, gameplay that intermix genres, a brilliant soundtrack more or less accompanied with an orchestral score nowadays, plots and storylines that are deep and engage the player on a level not seen before, and characters as well-rounded and as human as ever.

I'm not saying you're incorrect with some games being glitched than others. But just because a game has a harmless glitch tucked away in a corner of a game that is hardly noticeable doesn't make it unplayable or trash or garbage. And some games today do have game-breaking glitches. When it was released, Assassin's Creed III had these in droves.

The great thing about games nowadays is that the developer can be made aware of such bugs and can offfer downloadable updates and patches to help fix the bugs. Contrast to games of yesteryear when the game was shipped as is, and if it was buggy, then you were shit out of luck.

Also, I've had my Xbox, which is always at threat to get RRoD'd, for four years now. It was before the newer model was released, and it's chugging along brilliantly. The fact is that if you know how to actually take care of these systems, which requires about as much care as the older systems do, then you'll be fine.

Anywho, it's your opinion about how you feel with this gen, though I have a feeling I know what it is. Just thought I'd voice mine as a rebuttal.
