SG64's Gamecube Essentials

So, the Gamecube is one of my favorite consoles as many know. After all, it landed a spot in my username along with the N64 and Super Nintendo. I find that an alarming number of people are just now starting to get Gamecubes, since they're like $20 a piece, or simply missed out on a lot of what the Gamecube had to offer. If you are one of those people, then this is for you.

Gamecube FAQ

What color should I get?

Honestly, whichever one you prefer, but I personally recommend that you stay away from platinum as it scratches extremely easily.

Should I invest in multiple controllers?

Undoubtedly, this is a yes unless you live in a hole and don't talk to people. The Gamecube has some awesome multiplayer games.

I heard Gamecubes break easily. Is this true?

Yes and no. The Gamecube itself is a very resilient console, but it is prone to a couple of issues. First off, the lenses are known for going bad, and secondly, the spring that opens the disc tray sometimes gets weak over time. This will cause the open button to stick. Luckily, these problems are easily repairable if you feel comfortable working on the system, but of course there's also the fact that Gamecubes are $20, so it's no big deal to buy another.

Gamecube Essentials

Controllers
The Gamecube is a system with a lot of multiplayer games, so you're going to want at least 2 controllers, but 4 is preferable. Many may assume that the classic Nintendo brand controller is the best, and while they are certainly good controllers, they actually are not the best controllers for the system.

Pictured above is the Nintendo Wavebird, a wireless controller. This is honestly one of the greatest controllers ever made, and obviously it is officially licensed by Nintendo. Wavirds operate via infrared communication and can be set to 16 different channels, so hypothetically you could have a LAN party game of Mario Kart: Double Dash with all 8 players using Wavebirds, and no interference. The Wave bird is heavier than the standard controller, and requires 2 AA batteries. Unfortunately, it lacks the rumble feature, but it is still preferred over the classic wired controller due to the freedom it provides, as well as the fact that it just feels good in your hand. Unfortunately, Wavebirds are prone to a couple of issues involving their infrared communicators, and I've been through 2. They aren't cheap either, still costing between $40 and $60, but they're well worth their price.

The Nyo Airflo is one of my favorite controllers, and though I do not own one myself, I have used them. They're getting harder and harder to find, so if you stumble across one, be sure to pick it up. They're still going for around $25-$30, their original retail price. The Airflo is about .5x bigger than the standard controllers, so it fits to your hand a bit more, and the buttons, which are of extremely high quality, produce a tight, satisfying click, even the shoulder buttons. You may have notice the slits along the grip and the small holes surrounding the device. You can use a fan built in, on either low or high, to cool your hands while you play and prevent sweating. It's not a cold, frigid air, but just a breezy kind of current. The controller does feature rumble, and the slows down a bit when rumble is activated, but that's no biggie. Finally, the cord is 24 feet long, so you can get some pretty good distance.

Perhaps you're on a tight budget, but you still want a controller that is reliable and feels good. That's where the Madcatz Microcon comes in! They've been making these puppies since about 2002, and continue to produce them well into the Wii's lifespan, making them extremely easy to find. As you may have guessed, the Microcon is...well, micro. It's about .5x smaller than the standard controller, but it's still very comfortable. the sides have rubber grips that feel nice in your palm, and your fingers fit onto the shoulder buttons in a small groove. The joysticks feel responsive, and actually have a better grip on them than the official controllers. usually, when you see a gimmicky colored third party controller, you should just look the other way, but the Microcon is an exception to that rule. The best part is they only cost around $7 now.

Accessories

So, now that you have some good controllers, what else do you need?

You're going to need a memory card to save your game, and unless you're only going to get a couple of games, I recommend a 1000 block. These are starting to get hard to find, so you might have to pay around $20 or $30, but alternatively you can just get a couple of 250 block cards (the black ones). However, if you can't find an official 1000 block card, and you still want that massive amount of storage space, then you're in luck because Madcatz has beaten Nintendo at its own game.

The Madcatz 16x is 1015 block memory card that comes in several colors. They are slightly larger in physical size than a standard memory card, and they've actually been known to outlast official cards and even outperform them (less corrupted data). If you can find one, it should only run about $8-$10, and if you're really lucky it will come with a protective case as well.

The Gameboy player is, frankly, the most awesome accessory ever invented for any system. It turns your Gamecube into a giant Gameboy that displays your games on the TV screen. This was a steal when ti first launch, basically being a stay at home Gameboy for $50. Today, ti will still run you between $30-$50, but it's worth every penny. Beware that it is supposed to come with a disc, which software informational is stored on and which is necessary to run the accessory.

Games

If I include a screenshot and short description, it means that game is truly the cream of the crop. If you spot as asterisk (*) next to the name, that game is considered "rare" or is generally costly compared to other Gamecube games.

1080 Avalanche

Animal Crossing

Animal Crossing is a life simulator in which you pretty much do what you want within the confines of the game. the village in which you live is randomly generated, and there is plenty of variety.

Beyond Good & Evil*

Chibi-Robo!*

Custom Robo

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem*

Eternal Darkness is a very unique survival horror game that really messes with your head. There's lots of puzzle solving, but also a healthy amount of combat. This game is best played on 90's style television sets for reasons I cannot divulge without spoiling the game for you.

F-Zero GX

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance*

Path of Radiance is the first game in the franchise to be in full 3D. In case you are unfamiliar with it, Fire Emblem is a strategy RP in which permadeath is the defining feature. If one of your units falls in battle, they're gone for good.

geist

Gotcha Force*

Harvest Moon: Magical Melody

The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition*

Zelda Collector's Edition is a promotional disc that was bundles with some Gamecube systems. The disc includes the original Zelda as well as Zelda II, but the real draw here is Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. You may already own these games, but playing them on the Gamecube with a superior controller and at better resolutions is definitely worth it.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker*

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess*

The Gamecube version of Twilight Princess is considered by many to be superior to the Wii version. Not only does it control better, some of the textures look better running on the cube.

The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age

Lost Kingdoms

Luigi's Mansion*

Luigi's Mansion plays more like Metroid than a Mario game. You control Luigi as you explore a haunted mansion in search of Mario. There is heavy emphasis of exploration and puzzle solving.

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour

Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

Double Dash is the most eccentric game in the Mario Kart series. You control two characters in one kart, and can hold two items at once. Weight class is more important than in other Mario Kart games, and it has some of the most realistic physics in the series.

Mario Party 4

Mario Party 5

Mario Party 6

Mario Party 7*

Mario Power Tennis

Mario Superstar Baseball

You would have thought that Mario would have had a baseball game before the Gamecube, but it wasn't until around that time that baseball started getting popular in Japan, so I guess it all adds up. I personally am a baseball fan, and this is one of my favorite arcade style baseball games.

Megaman Anniversary Collection

Megaman Network Transmission

Megaman X Collection

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes*

Twin Snakes is basically MGS1 running on MGS2's engine. That's really is all I need to say, it's Metal Gear, and if you don't love it, you should be ashamed.

Metroid Prime

Metroid Prime is in first person, but it's still an adventure game before it's a shooter. This is one of the most immersing games I have ever played, and it holds up very well. It also helps that it's like $3 now.

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Naruto: Clach of Nija 2(seriously, I'm not joking, it's a great game)

Pac Man VS

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door*

Take everything awesome about the first game. Now multiply it, improve it, and just make it better in general. Congratulations, you just made Thousand Year Door.

Pikmin

Pikmin 2*

Pikmin 2 is a rare sort of sequel. It literally just improved everything from the first game. It's gorgeous, it's easy to get lost in, and it's easily one of the best games on the system.

Pokemon Coliseum*

Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness*

Resident Evil

Known among fans as REmake, this is a complete overhaul of the original game. According to the creator of the series, this remake is 70% different, but if you ask anyone they'll tell you it's almost 100% better. You'll have to adjust to control scheme, but it's worth it. I's also in my opinion one of the best looking games ever created.

Resident Evil 0

Resident Evil 4

One of the most revolutionary games in the last couple of decades, Resident Evil 4 changed the face of survival horror, or rather, its control scheme. While in my opinion, the horror games that followed in this ones wake are pathetic, RE4 is still amazing.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica X

Skies of Arcadia Legends*

Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle

Sonic Riders

Soul Calibur II

SSX On Tour

Starfox Adventures

Starfox Assault

Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

Super Mario Strikers

Super Mario Sunshine*

Super Smash Bros. Melee*

this is a game that needs little explanation. It's one of the best sequels ever created, one of the best games ever made, and possibly the best game on the Gamecube.

Timesplitters 2

Timesplitters: Future Perfect

Viewtiful Joe

Viewtiful Joe is a gorgeous sidescrolling beat-em up. It's an ode to games of years past, and it belongs in any Gamecube library.

Viewtiful Joe 2

This might be an idea for me to do on the Dreamcast. Somehow though, I do not think it will be a popular as this could become.

Yep, they do. I've had around 5-6 gamecubes of my own and I also fix other peoples consoles for money. Gamecubes biggest issues are faulty lenses and the open button getting stuck.

Mine's a lucky cube, hasn't broken since I got it. I think I got it in 2003 or 2004.

I want an orange one.

How in the ass is Smash Bros. Melee rare, and Resident Evil not? I had to find my copy of Resident Evil on amazon, and I can find melee in most every Hock Shop. Lol.
