Gaming as a learning tool

Often, people interpret games as a threat to intelligence, but I think the opposite. What are some examples, perhaps even in your own life of video games being use to educate people or learn things?

As a kid, like most of my time, I played Pokemon way too much. Not only did I learn about strategies, but I also increased my vocabulary. I had no idea what the words "accuracy" or "statistics" or even "gender" meant until I played Pokemon.

Another example is a guy I work with at the venue. His father just passed away a year ago, and he was asking me to find him a PS1 and the Final Fantasy games because his father taught him how to read with FF7 and FF8. He said he would play, and his dad would narrate by reading everything in FF7, but on FF8 once he got halfway through the game, his father stopped and told him to read it. He sounded out the words, and his father still watched and pronounced words he couldn't or didn't know.

The meaning of words, like you said. I've learned a lot of words you don't usually find in daily life in video games. I've also learned a lot about history, geography, and especially general knowledge. There's so many little facts that are surprisingly helpful.

Hand to eye coordination is a big one as well. It makes things like driving & typing easier.

I don't think I would know the vocabulary of words that I do had it not been for video games. It also really help me appreciate storytelling in general.

Happy Wheels taught me to laugh at death.

Video game death, I swear.

I actually was to serious for my own good before I played that, so I'm actually being serious.

Also, Pokemon taught me how to connect with friends over a game, because prior to playing it with my friends, I was always pretty reclusive. It taught me to be comfortable about doing the things I like, with the people I love.

That is a really touching story, the Final Fantasy one.
Sorry to hear he passed away.

As a younger child I don't actually think they taught me much. I hardly ever played with anyone else, no one really used games to teach me anything and I was pretty terrible at playing them most of the time.
They were fun though, and I highly doubt they threatened my intelligence.

Just remembered the Ace Attorney games taught me quite a lot. Funnily enough you don't know much about the courts when you're 12/13.

That's true. I remember reading about some court cases here in the US, and I'd understand most of the terminology.
