PS3 Yellow Light of Death

Me again with yet another PS3 issue. I swear ever since I traded my crashed PS3 Slim for this fatboy model at a flea market game repair shop I've had nothing but problems. I do regret doing that and wishing that I had just put the money toward a brand new console but anyway, now this thing just crapped out on me as well. I was in the middle of a game on Black Ops II just now and the console just abruptly shut itself off, the light flashed yellow, then it turned red and just blinked over and over. When I tried to turn it back on, same result. The light turns on green, then flashes yellow and the console shuts off and the light blinks red until I hit the button again. I tried unplugging it for a bit, same result. Help?

If nothing works I will just have to do what I should have done in the first place and bought a new console. I see you just can't go the cheap route when it comes to this sort of thing.

Sheeesh....I haven't got a PS3 or a 360 as of yet....all of this 'red ring/death', 'yellow light', 'alien anal probe', etc. isn't very encouraging, especially when dealing with the second-hand market....

I think you reported having some fan problems with this one, so it probably wasn't too far off from keeling over when you bought it. You could send it in to Sony to get repaired or attempt to open it up and fix it yourself, but at this point I'd say that buying a new Slim console would be better.

Yeah, I can't even access the recovery menu. Brand new slim it is I suppose.

Like Tanis said if your fan failed the PS3 probably overheated and then killed itself off at the same time. I think my original PS3 is going to die soon too. It seems fine playing older games but with some of the newer ones it becomes a bit slow.

Here's what I did a few months ago when my OG PS3 died: I bought one of the bundles with PS+ and games included (I got the God of War bundle). The system comes with a 1 year warranty and you can buy the PlayStation Protection plan with it... 1 year for $44.99 or 2 years for $59.99. The kicker, though, is that you have up until one year after purchasing the console to buy the protection plan. So I just put away $5.00 a week util I had $60 for the plan. It also stacks with your 1 year warranty so that gives you 3 years of coverage. And if you get one of the bundles you can save on paying for Plus and also trade in the games right off the bat if you already own or have played them. Personally I already had all the GoW games so that ended up kinda sorta saving me some money on it after selling them.

Yeah, I think I'm just going to have to cut my losses and go this route. I've been eyeing the new Super Slim model anyway, in blue.

Sorry to hear that, I got burned too on my first fat ps3. That was an expensive mistake. Go the slim route, mine has been working great. Maybe you can bring it back to the dude that sold it to you?

Brandyn, you might want to fix it at gophermods.com for $80 if you want it. I heard a lot of people who own old fat PS3 consoles fix at this website. I'm not sure myself though that this gophermods might be reliable to you.
