Racism in the Work Place

So, I got a new job several days ago, full time, at a truck stop. There is an old black guy working there who I at first thought was a pretty smart guy. I took out some trash and he was talking to someone about how, and I quote, "Obama is trying to give everyone free insurance and they're too stupid to see it". Still under the impression that he's a decently smart individually, I attempt to explain some of Obamacare's intricacies. Before I can even really get started, he goes on a tirade about how white people ****ed up the world, and now the black man has to straighten it out and "y'all" are mad because there's a black man with power and we have to listen to him. I found all this hilarious up until the point where he address me as "you white republican KKK mother****er". So first off, I'm not even republican, so that's kind of funny, but at the time I went off. I really lit him up, and to be honest if I wasn't at work I'm not sure what I might of done. Word spread fast around the workplace, and me being in the KKK became the joke of the night, one of the head managers even laughing and saying "There's that white mother****er..." when I went to the fuel desk. It was really funny, and everyone was impressed that I stood up to this guy because apparently he's said things like this before and no one had the balls to. And therein lies the problem. Why didn't anyone say anything? Why does this ignorant son of a bitch still have a job with this company?

Report it above your manager's position. I'm under the impression this truck stop is part of a chain, maybe Love's or Pilot, so if they gave you any phone number to report incidents in the work place, do so. You have witnesses to it. Your post here is pretty mch documentation on the incident, but it wouldn't hurt to get it in writing.

It'd be hilarious if this guy lost his job because of you, you white KKK republican mother****er. xD

It's Pilot, but it's owned by a local oil mogul and his sons (The Sadler Bros. if anyone here likes NASCAR for some odd reason. I personally hate the "sport"). They've been known to not give a shit about things before. Anyway, I don't feel I'll have to tell the head manager myself, as quickly as this spread.

it has been proven in a few polls given out, that b**** people are more than 30 percent, to throws out the race card. I do not want to offend anyone with this and not same all are the same. esp. down in the south states, its like a touchy subject ....

using the same polls given said, that little more than 10 percent of w**** people throw out the race card ....

i mean, set that proud aside and leave the past in the past. do not posion the future with the past .....

i have nothing wrong w/ other races, religions, etc ..... but once you disrespect me, than thats a totally different story. respect is earned and not given .....

esp. pushing their beliefs upon me .... they have theirs and i have mine ...

and they dont like it, they can always go back .... IMO

I don't care about race, because people are who they are. I've had friends of all sorts of different races, and it's never a factor. If people suck, they suck, if they're awesome, there awesome. Plain and simple.

Why it's even still a factor today in life is what angers me. Yes I do believe any sort of historical racism has been bad and way out of line. No, I do not believe holding grudges to this day is going to solve a thing. No, I'm not a fan of anyone pulling the racist card in a lot of situations where it aint called for.

I'm in Canada as most of you know, and we're very diverse, so for 99% of the population, everyone's like me and could care less about what race someone is. When legitimate racism comes out (such as this), I'm not a fan. No one is, and no one should be. To me, in this day and age, it's a cop-out to an easy win or blame, and in my mind is pretty pathetic when it's pulled to win any sort of scenario. That said, it's rare in this day and age as well, unless it's used for comedy/poking fun at stereotypes of whatever race, don't matter which.

Back to this. Verbal attack over race, really is just either a cop-out to gain leverage on a matter, or a grudge. The first of which, is just BS, and a disrespectful way to even carry out a conversation or mindset. The latter of possibilities is a touchy subject, I'm sure we can all agree. HOWEVER, in this scenario the assumption is made that Caleb is racist, and the argument is carried out after that point. Grudge, or leverage, or both, Caleb is his own person that never (So he's said) did anything racist, so the conversation escalates to an unnecessary level.

Race had nothing to do with it in the end. Politics however, I could understand a bit more, but this guy went the dirty route, making assumptions about someone to win a conversation. Which even in making an assumption about someone or something about them... Let's just go with this, to assume makes an ass out of u(you) and me.

That's the bottom line.

As a black man though I don't use the Race card as a crutch...if I have a conflict with somebody that's actually the last thing I assume. I just don't like bringing race into anything I look at people, black or white, for who they are. And growing up as a black nerd I walk a fine line and have subsequently have had conflicts with both groups in the past.

But I would agree that what the man said was going a little overboard. In the same way I wouldn't want to be called a black mf, I think everyone regardless of ethnic background is entitled to dignity and respect unless they prove otherwise. I am guessing the reason nobody said anything to him before is because they did not want to appear racist for doing so, especially since he is an older man.

But politics and the workplace just don't mix well anyway, just like politics and friends. Political views are just something best saved for CNN boards or something.
