inFAMOUS: Festival of Blood
As Halloween is upon us, I thought this time we would take a look at a Halloween themed game (hooray for cliches). This game is inFAMOUS: Festival of Blood, a DLC game which was released on Halloween of 2011 and has you once again taking control of Cole MacGrath who now has vampire powers as well. But don't worry, he doesn't sparkle in the sun or anything. He combusts in the sun like a normal vampire.
This time, Cole is kidnapped on Halloween night by an ancient cult of bloodsuckers and his blood is used to re-animate the corpse of the long dead vampire queen, Bloody Mary. She then comes to life and quite literally sinks her teeth into him which has some undesirable side effects, including the fact that if Cole cannot cure himself by the end of Halloween night he will become a full vampire and be under her mind control forever. Set during inFAMOUS 2 in New Marais during the town's annual Halloween festival called "Pyre Night", it's a nice Halloween-ish story that I am pretty sure is non-canon anyway.
"Where's Simon Belmont when you need him?"
You start with some of the powers from inFAMOUS 2, but not all of them. There is no karma in this game, the karma meter has been replaced with a Blood Meter. When you have Blood meter, you can pull off your vampire moves such as transforming into a swarm of bats to fly, your vampire vision, etc. The blood meter can be refilled by either defeating enemies, or simply approaching an unsuspecting civilian and pressing R1 to grab them and dig in. Of course the latter is more fun and much easier. Also interesting is that the Amp has been replaced by a giant metal stake, and Cole's vampire skin is pretty cool. The Militia and Swamp Monsters have been traded for Vampires and demon-like creatures. The good thing about there not being Karma is that collateral damage is not really an issue so you can go crazy during fights.
Much like inFAMOUS 2, the post campaign entertainment comes not in the form of online multiplayer, but User Generated Content; in this case, the ability to create and share missions online. UGC missions are the green marks on your mini map, and the community has come up with a nice array of decent ones. What is cool about this feature is that before you even play the UGC mission you can see ratings and reviews of the mission from other players. That said, with a game series such as this which is very single player-centric, it's good that they went this route as opposed to shoe-horning in an online multiplayer.
Being that this is a DLC game you are restricted to just a portion of the sandbox from inFAMOUS 2, that being the New Marais town square area along with a couple new exclusive levels like the vampire infested underground and Bloody Mary's crypt. The game is roughly half the length of inFAMOUS 2 which is not bad for 10 bucks. It will put you in the spirit of Halloween and is a fun game especially if you are a big inFAMOUS fan (or just someone looking for a cool Halloween themed video game).
