Nintendo Ends Production of Wii Console in Japan

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2013/10/.../?mod=yahoo_hs

Nintendo Co. has ended production of the Wii flagship console for the Japanese market. Best known for upstaging its more powerful rivals with a lower-tech but more fun approach, the Wii is survived by the Wii U, Wii minis sold abroad, and the Nintendo 3DS handheld.

Code named “Revolution” during development, the Wii arrived on November 19, 2006 amid derision from gaming critics and hard-core gamers. “What’s wrong with ‘Revolution’?” Nintendo fans said. “Urine big trouble, Nintendo,” the Dallas Morning News’s tech writer snarked in a four-paragraph play on the scatological possibilities of the name, after Nintendo announced the first details of the console. Sales soon proved wrong the naysayers and those lamenting the death of Nintendo.

Featuring a simple and intuitive game controller shaped like a TV remote, the Wii represented Nintendo’s decision to bow out of the game tech arms race, in which Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. were competing to generate the most powerful graphics. The inability to support high-definition TV graphics meant the Wii could retail at half the price of the spec-heavy Xbox360 and PlayStation 3. In the end, the father of Super Mario and Donkey Kong proved that hardware counted, but content mattered more.

Designed so “even your mother could use it,” the Wii transformed living room parties around the world. Senior citizens and children swung their Wii-motes to play Wii Tennis and Frisbee golf on “Wii Sports,” while Nintendo’s Virtual Console meant that you could play games originally featured for the arcade or on, say, Commodore 64, for gamers hankering a nostalgia trip.

“Wii Sports” became the world’s best-selling game of all time in March with 82 million copies sold worldwide, surpassing “Super Mario Bros.”

And the content kept snowballing. In addition to Nintendo’s flagship games such as “The Legend of Zelda” and “Pokemon”, game makers worldwide – from Activision Blizzard Inc., Capcom Co., Sega Corp. and Ubisoft Entertainment S.A. — flocked to produce games for the Wii.

Sales of the Wii, which will cease in Japan when stores sell out of stock, topped 100 million worldwide in June, far outrunning both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox360. Production will continue on a limited basis outside Japan, but is unlikely to last long. Sales of the classic Wii in the year ended in March halved in the Americas from a year-ago, while falling 62% in areas outside other the Americas and Japan, and sales for the quarter ended in June suggest a still steeper decline this year.

The torch has now passed to the Wii U. Like the Wii, it faces a market that largely feels Nintendo’s heyday is long past, and will be fighting Sony and MicrosoftMSFT +0.09%’s ultra-powerful next-generation consoles, to launch in November. Sales of the Wii U have so far disappointed, forcing Nintendo to cut the console’s price, seven months into its launch last year.

Mario and Luigi also face a new universe, in which first-person shooter games such as “Call of Duty” dominate sales outside Japan and where blockbuster, big budget games such as “Grand Theft Auto V” raked in more than $1 billion in three days. The Wii U has big shoes to fill.

“The Wii’s production will end soon in Japan, and eventually sales will be phased out globally,” a Nintendo spokeswoman said. “It’s just time.”

Yes we appreciate you trying to help, j. Many of these stories you post are either outdated or virtually copies of each other and they are starting to really clutter the New Posts feed.
