Video Game Prices

So in the 80's, game's were around $35-$40, and then after the SNES launched they became $50 for a long time until the 360/PS3 where they went to $60. In the UK, games are the equivalent of $80 USD, while in Australia they are even the equivalent of almost $95 USD! My question is, if gming prices where to go up again, what would you do? Quit gaming? Only play old games? Continue as normal?

Right now it's hard for me to say. I don't have a job yet and I certainly won't be in my target career for a log time. When I'm earning money £50 per game may not seem too bad, especially if I don't have a lot of other costs. Although right now I'm focussing on 3DS and by the time I get a PS4 there'll be plenty of second hand games to buy, hopefully.

I'd probably go retro for a while, especially since I have a huge backlog of unfinished games already

I forgot to even mention DLC. Games like Borderlands actually cost upwards of $160 when you take into account all of the DLC.

Same hear. There are plenty of older games I've never gotten around to trying. Thankfully they seem to be staying in the 40-60 dollar range for now..

$70 would be tough to swallow. And then there's DLC as Cube mentioned. As well as Online passes, season passes, and all that nonsense. The sheer greed of the developers has really sent this industry into the toilet during the latter half of this past console gen. Yes, the goal of any business has always been to make money but developers have become uneccessarily greedy; pretending they are poor and don't make enough profit from the product just because of the "evil used games market".

And while you could argue that DLC and online passes are "optional", you are not getting the full experience without them. As game prices go up, we have the right to get the most for our money. Having DLC much later down the road from the game's release is totally fine to keep it fresh, but day one DLC is a different story, as well as online passes.

If the max price on games were indeed to rise I would probably not advance past the current gen, especially with Microsoft (and Sony I'm sure) wishing they could implement the DRM crap that they were originally talking about with the Xbox One, which I believe they could still do via a mandatory firmware update once everyone has the new consoles. I'd rather just keep what I have and focus on my other hobbies if this happens.

There would be no way to justify paying $70+ for a video game especially considering the hidden cost of buying DLC. If it went anywhere past $70 dollars for a standard edition, I think I'd drop the hobby.

I'm back to retro games tbh even though I only look up downloadble games only through Wii/PSN.

I stop purchasing games after I complete my (final) wishlist games in MGSV.

So, I don't care what games developers intend to do in the near future, grabbing more money through DLC/season pass. Playing online in PS4 would require you to be PS+ member. Gee..
