Diary of a Black Nerd 2

*A blog that originated on my FB, I decided to post it here, too*

Greetings, reader(s?). It is I, Brandyn T. Johnson, once more. People of all persuasions found my first DoaBN interesting, insightful, and...colorful (pardon the pun). So this sequel entry is dedicated to fans of my writing, all three of them.

In this installment of (what I guess is) my little social commentary blogs, I feel compelled to talk about Friends. No, not (my guilty pleasure) TV show about a bunch of 30 somethings who just sit around in a coffee house all day.

What exactly is a friend, anyway? It is one of those words like "Love" which doesn't have a precise definition. Or rather, it varies depending on the individual. But what constitutes a friend? Someone who understands you in ways that others don't? Someone who you are always happy to hear from and talk to? Or perhaps it is that person that you can call at three in the morning if you need to.

Those closest to me who fit into those aforementioned categories know that 2013 was an...interesting year for me to say the least. I learned not only a bit about myself but about those around me too. We all have those friends who we can talk to just for a laugh or something. And that is all well and good. But how many of those friends do you honestly feel would be there to help you pick up the pieces when things fall apart? I once walked high school halls. Always a fly on the wall, I have seen people gossip and say ugly things behind others' backs, and then sycophantically interact with them face to face and through Facebook through artificial smiles and manufactured laughs.

Silly as this might sound, I think people had this...sort of exaggerated image of me. I've had people call me a Saint, "too perfect", etc. I mean usually it is supposed to be jokingly but simultaneously I can tell they actually think that to an extent. While I enjoy being associated with positivity like that...it also comes with more stinging implications. I mean, the reason why most people today find Superman to be boring is because he has out of this world strength, a bajillion powers, and no conventional weaknesses. In other words...a perfect, virtually invincible and incorruptible hero is no fun.

The point of that little tangent is to illustrate that while I do what I can to help everyone, at the end of the day I am very much human with needs, desires, and moments of weakness like everyone else. As I have learned recently. During these times, is when I take a good look at who is helping me get up after the fall, and without judgement.

Another thing I learned is that sometimes, oftentimes, friendships deteriorate and that it is okay to let them go when they do. Even the best of friends sometimes just drift apart eventually. As people grow older, their interests may change or their personalities grow more distinct and they eventually come to terms that they no longer have anything at all common. I mention this aspect because I have seen many people become upset when wondering why they are drifting apart from someone who once once a close friend. It has happened to me before, a few times. Not to be cynical, as some people you meet will indeed go on to become a lifelong friend; but how many people can really say that their best friend has been the same person since kindergarten? Since fourth grade? Sixth?

I guess the last thing I have to say about the topic that I have learned is that good friends can come from the most unlikely places. I originally was unhappy about moving to Arizona five years ago, but during my stay there I ended up meeting a few people there who I can safely and confidently say I know I will be lifelong friends with. Upon returning to Michigan I was originally upset about having to spend senior year at a brand new high school in a district I had never attended instead of going to the district I went to prior to moving out of state where I already knew most of the people in my grade. While it did kind of suck graduating with a bunch of strangers, I did end up meeting a small crew of good people at the school who went on to become the friends who are some of my closest ones at the moment who I still keep in contact with and they help me out whenever I need it and vice versa. As for the high school I had originally wanted to go to upon returning to this state, ironically I would find out over time that I no longer had any friends left there. Many of the people just forgot me, some of which were the same ones I laughed it up with back in the day and had considered myself tight with. And the others...we just drifted apart due to us having gotten older and just realizing we no longer had anything in common.

So the point being that people change and some are only meant to be in our lives for a certain period before moving on. And that's okay. In retrospect I am glad I did not return to my original school district or else I would probably really have only a couple friends here.

That, my friends, is my two cents. I hope you found this entry as insightful and interesting as the original (but probably not because sequels always suck right?). And rest assured that if you are reading this via Facebook that nothing about fake friends is directed towards you because I for the most part don't keep people around that I don't truly care for (unless you are a family member I feel obligated to have on here). I just thought I would share my two cents that you will perhaps consider when some of you scroll down your list of 400+.....friends...
