The future of dedicated handheld consoles

How much longer do you guys think that dedicated handheld game system industry will last? Do you think this may possibly be the last generation for it?

I have always been and still am just as much of a portable system gamer as I am on consoles, ever since my first GameBoy. While the market for it may still be there, it seems that it is becoming harder to convince people (or at least, non/casual gamers) to buy dedicated portable game systems due to the rise of mobile phone and tablet games that people can use to get their game fix instead, something we didn't really have 10 years ago. Granted, the 3DS is a major success but even still, do you think we will get more handhelds after this?

It's an interesting thing to think about, considering you can even get handheld based games on your phone. However, I don't see them disappearing. Tablets and phones can only hold so much space for games and you have to spend quite amount of money if you want to get more space. Maybe I'm biased because I love portables, but they're probably not going anywhere soon.

Sony might drop out of the handheld market, but I don't see Nintendo doing that anytime soon.

I love my Vita, I have 22 or so games in it. If only the people who are like "The Vita doesn't have games, does it?" would realise that there's a lot of quality on the system.

3DS is looking great.

I don't think mobile games will ever truly kill dedicated gaming handhelds, especially with the 3DS still going strong. Worst case scenario, Sony drops out of the Handheld market(which would be a shame, I love the PSP and the Vita looks very nifty)

I also hope that the Vita makes a turnaround. Not just because I love mine, but if Sony were to drop out then Nintendo having a monopoly on it wouldn't be good either since competition is always beneficial to the consumer as it drives innovation.

I would hope not, handheld is very convenient for on the go gaming without the need for a lot of built in memory like on iPhone and such. I love my 3DS and would hate to see Nintendo get out of the handheld market. I can't comment on PSP or Vita because I don't even pay attention to what games are out for them. I did want a PSP at one point but only for like two games so no one would get it for me. v.v

Takeayoshii is an unknown quantity at this point

That would never happen. It's really popular especially with kids. But maybe, we'd be able to see a full Pokemon game on console if that were to happen. But I really doubt it.

For Nintendo to move away from making handhelds would be the day they admit complete defeat. Their saving grace the past few years has been their handheld business, especially as of late with the failure of the Wii U.

Sony, I think, is learning that they cannot readily compete with tablet/smartphone gaming on top of trying to beat out Nintendo. Just as Sony will learn that they should play it safe with home consoles, Nintendo will learn the complete opposite; barring the gimmicky success of the Wii, their home console successes have been waning considerably. I believe we're now on the cusp of seeing Nintendo's home console success slipping away.

The bright side is that their handheld success will be their golden parachute. Focusing on handheld gaming only, they could begin to fight back the success on tablet/smartphone gaming.

And when they can't, we'll see another business innovation the likes none of us on this forum have ever seen: if Nintendo needs to survive the smartphone/tablet success, they'll either re-adapt their handhelds into gaming tablets/smartphones, or they will license their games for use on other devices.

Really, the handheld market, let alone Nintendo's future, can be seen in a really exciting light. However, I think we have another hardware generation or two before we see the complete end of dedicated handhelds.
