Link Old Is Ocarina of Time overrated?

Now I am not saying it's anything short of a great game by any means but I find that many Zelda fans are too close minded about nee games in the series. What do you think?

It was an amazing game for its time and still is pretty great by today's standards. I think it deserves every bit of praise it gets. On the flip side newer Zelda titles often receive unwarranted criticism from fans who, let's be honest, are blinded by nostalgia for OoT. 3D Zeldas since then have mostly improved on the formula and mechanics that OoT set the foundation for.

I came in to post this word for word.

OOT is/was the best game of it's time. I don't know how anybody can deny that, but compared to later zelda titles? Most games trump it but let the nostalgia set in.

I do think so. It's not that I think its not that good(on the contrary, it's fantastic), but it's that I think all of the games after it were so much better

Yes and no. They are so many different people/gamer's that there will be those who do overrate it, and then those who don't. This happens with just about everything in life.

OoT is much like Super Mario 64 and FFVII, in every respect. They all well deserve their praise, not just because of being the first 3D world adventures that they were back then, but because of how they introduced new gameplay that continues to be used even now. But I do believe that this does influence greatly the fine line between receiving deserved praises, and being overrated.

A lot of it does have to do with nostalgia as Tanis said. The Super Mario Galaxy games are greatly praised because of their new achievements of gameplay and such, but also because it feels like Super Mario 64 all over again, just enhanced.

I never focused much on which Zelda is the best. They all have their good and bad sides. Certain games will hold higher praise than others because the good may outweigh the bad in them.

I think it gets the praise it deserves, but in excess. Sure, the game had amazing design and story, and is a masterpiece as far as the Nintendo 64 is concerned, but as Tanis said, nostalgia towards this game blinds people towards appreciating newer Zelda titls.

I feel that it gets proper praise, but WAY too much, because as with any game, it has its faults.

Perhaps in everyday conversation it can feel like it's overrated. So many people say OOT is their favorite Zelda game and why shouldn't they? It was and still remains groundbreaking for the Zelda franchise and video games as a whole.

A lot of casual gamers played OOT and didn't continue past it towards the other Zelda games. For whatever reason, many people just quit with Zelda and remember OOT fondly. Perhaps the nostalgia and the fact nearly everyone has played it at least once gives it that overrated feeling, but it's really not. It's certainly not perfect in every aspect, but it does deserve the praise it gets.

It was a great game, but it was only as good as the other Zelda games. LTTP was amazing, but it doesn't get anywhere near as much praise as OOT. Same for MM, WW, and so on.

No, to be honest I don't think it is really overrated. Especially since it was so groundbreaking. While the 3D Zeldas that follow are for the most part great games, they haven't come close to what OOT achieved in terms of the whole package of atmosphere, dungeon design, story....
However I do agree that LTTP does not get anywhere near the level of praise it should. These games both are the yardstick to which all zelda games are held against

I think it's only as good as other Zelda games because other Zelda games from that point onwards used OoT as the basis for its design. Same goes for ALttP: it's the basis for any 2D Zelda after its release.

Taken by itself, Ocarina of Time is still a groundbreaking game that can be considered dated by today's standards. But hell, you can say that about any game 20-25 years ago. Super Mario 64's camera, when compared to newer games, is infuriating to control. Doom is too difficult compared to Modern Shooter 2014.

I don't think that OoT gets any more praise than any other Zelda game now; in fact, MM is beginning to show itself as the most overrwated Zelda title. Point being, even if it seems dated compared to newer titles, you can't deny that at the time OoT did things new and did things right. And that's why it 's held in such high regard.
