Ask a sword question

Many of you are aware that I am an enthusiast of blades. I like weapons in general, but swords will always be my favorite, and likely the ones I will have the more vast knowledge of. I've noticed that people in general are actually pretty ignorant about swords - the way they are/were used, historical things, etc. Basically I want to help stop this, especially in the video game community (because apparently some people think videogames are some sort of weapon authority, which is ridiculous). So ask away! I believe Alice is also somewhat endowed in this field.

Neat thread.

Is the Katana used only by Samurai or Ninja?

YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I KNOW, CALEB!
But yea, I know some stuff.

But anyway, no, the Katana was not a weapon exclusive to Samurai, and I'm not sure that ninja even used them, as historically, the point of ninja was to kill samurai.

But no, the katana was just a weapon that gained popularity with samurai at some point in history, and because so many samurai fell in love with it, it became a sort of pop-culture idea that it was a samurai-exclusive blade.

How do you generally know when to sharpen your sword, and how do you know if it's sharp enough/too sharp?

Swords aren't really a general knowledge type thing so of course people are "ignorant" about them. Not everyone collects them. The most I've seen of swords were at lame resale shops and strange cosplayers.

Katana popularity increased because close combat began to change in Japan. The faster someone could draw their sword, the faster they could defeat their opponent. I don't know much about swords, but in AP World History, we talked about feudal Japan and katana and that just...stuck out to me.

What is your favorite period-esque sword?

I've played Muramasa, so obviously I know all there is to know about swords. Like, they all have stats and cool names, and you can take a few to craft into new ones.

To answer the samurai/ninja thing, katana literally means "longsword" in Japanese. The samurai did not use them exclusive - pretty much everyone in the Japanese military had one, or at least a variation like the wakizashi.Even geisha carried tanto's or wakizashi for personal protection. As for ninja, they're kind of like spetsnaz or Navy seals. Their job is to get in,g et out, and do it quietly. Katana's aren't really fit for that. If Ninja did use swords, they were probably procured on site from armories or stolen from the bodies of victims.

That really depends on the type of sword. Most asian swords hardly need to be sharpened unless they've been severely abused.

It changes all the time, actually. Currently I'm more interested in claymores than anything else. I will say that ninjato are one of my consistent favorites, mostly because of the mystery surrounding them. As mentioned in a previous answer, ninja likely didn't use swords unless procured on site. No one really knows in ninjato ever historically existed, or if they are a modern creation. There's evidence supporting both theories to some degree.I always enjoy reading debates about it. Either way, there are some beautiful modern ninjato out there - the one I own is probably my favorite sword that I've actually owned.
