The Day you Got [Console]

I like stories. I like telling stories, and I like hearing other's stories. In this thread, you can post about when you first got any particular console, and your first experiences with it. I find that these memories tend to be pretty sentimental to some gamers, so it might be fun to share them.

I'll start with the GBA.

It was my 12th birthday, and I had a party at Pizza Hut. Pretty much all of my school friends were invited. The majority of us were Pokemon fanatics, and I truthfully only wanted a GBA because of the possibility of new Pokemon games later. At this point, I did't really use the internet for much more than cheat codes and homework, so I had no idea if there were any rumors or leaked information regarding such a thing. In fact, I didn't even know about the GBA SP. I had asked for a GBA, and pretty much knew I was going to get one. I opened up one of my presents and inside was a square box depiction a sleek, equally square shaped product that kind of resembled a laptop. The GBA I knew looked nothing like this, and so I announced "This is the wrong one" to which all of my friends collectively waved their arms proclaiming "NO! KEEP IT! IT'S BETTER! KEEP IT!", and so I did. I didn't have any Gameboy Advance games at first, and for that day I only played Pokemon Silver. The next day I spent some birthday money to get The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past because it looked interesting. Believe it or not, I'd never played a Zelda game up until that point. That probably comes as a shock since you all know what a big Zelda fanatic I am. I didn't buy a whole lot of GBA games to be honest, and the next big purchase I really remember was Pokemon Ruby. The day the games came out, I went with my grandmother to Wal Mart, simply to get a glimpse of the box art because I knew I couldn't afford them. On the way into the store, a gust picked up, and a few bills rolled by me. I chased after them, and it added up to $35. I don't remember if the 1st Party games retailed for $30 or if my grandmother had to pitch in $5 to make it $40, but regardless I took home Ruby that day and was extremely happy.

Christmas of 2002, one of my first gifts was a GameCube controller. Immediately I knew the cat was out of the bag; after spending my entire holiday season up to that point thinking Santa couldn't find a GCN, I had but one part of the whole. I received Super Mario Sunshine, StarFox Adventures, and Sonic Mega Collection. The GameCube is a system that I hold very close to my heart, because it got me into Nintendo.

I was 5/6...7(?) years old, it was 1999 or 2000 and all my friends at school went on about their Playstations. I thought a PlayStation was a thing you could push toy cars around, so I asked for one. My cousin bought me one for Christmas and I was shocked and hadn't a clue what it was since I'd never played a video game before. It came with Crash Bandicoot and Toy Story 2.

My first console was the PlayStation. I can't remember how old I was when I got it but it must have been before the PS2 was released. That would make me under 5 lol, I was a spoiled kid. I got the PS2 when I was around 7 or 8 I believe, I wanted the PS3 when it came out but my mum just told me she couldn't afford it and I accepted that after seeing the price.

When I was around 6 I got a GBA. It was around the time when it was released I think since the only one I'd seen before was a Gameboy Colour and the games for that. My mum went out and bought me one but I was quite surprised myself when she came back with a GBA and not a colour. She told me it was the newer version and I was just happy to have one. I still want a Gameboy Colour though ;P.

I was in the 8 years old when me and my brother got our N64. It was the beginning of December and I remember being sad that I was moving away from all my friends and family. (We were moving from Louisiana to Illinois.) Before we left for long car trip, my parents said they had an early Christmas present from my uncle that I was close to. (He couldn't come give it to us or come say goodbye because he had just been put in jail.) It was of course, a N64 and Ocarina of Time. I was super excited but then a lil sad because I had to wait until we settled in Illinois before we could set it up. >.< Then my dad set it up and ended up playing it himself first. (He's a big fan of the Zelda series as well. =3) I wasn't good at the game at all, but I loved watching him play. Then copying his file and running around doing whatever I wanted. It became a family ritual gathering around the TV to watch him play, it was nice. Back then I only did the Deku Tree by myself, and then I copied his file after he completed it and beat Ganondorf (or Ganondork as we called him >.>) and Ganon. xP

I was 19 when I got the Wii U. I had gotten my money from college, something I wasn't used to. A few weeks before I went to GameStop to preorder the Wii U so I was like "I'm safe, they'll have me one. They put my name down and got my personal information." etc etc. However, when it came the day for the Wii U to be released, I went to GameStop only to be told they gave away my Wii U to another customer and so I didn't have one.

Well, onto plan B. (After a few tears and wanting to cuss out the employees, but I didn't because I've worked in retail) I called around all the stores in my area, from a Target that was 30 minutes away to a Walmart that was located in the ghetto. Like...the bad ghetto. Not that "well this is a bad part of town but people are nice" kind of ghetto. People had been shot in broad daylight at this Walmart. So I called them. They had a Wii U. Just one. They couldn't hold it for me, but if I got there before someone else it would be mine.

Mom was gone to the tanning bed. My great grandfather was at home...so I called him. We sped all the way to the ghetto Walmart and they pulled it out of the most sketchy looking place possible. It was like..hidden under something. IDK. Anyways, I bought the Wii U and my great grandfather left me in the parking lot, alone, with a Wii U for 30 minutes because he forgot about me.

Thankfully he came back and I had a Wii U.

Christmas '06, the DS Lite had just come out along with New Super Mario Bros. I totally HAD to have it. But this thing was sold out like everywhere in the city. When I opened my gifts on Christmas day I was happy but a little melancholy about the lack of DS. Then my grandma hands me this box and says "there's one more gift it's a little educational thing". I nearly rolled my eyes, but when I ripped back a side of the wrapping and saw that Dual Screen logo, I was almost like the Nintendo 64 kid. She later told me how it was the last DS at the last Toy's R Us she went to. Apparently the guy was keeping it out of sight probably to buy for himself but he ended up giving it to her.

Hey Super. Nice thread.

The very first console my brother and I got was the Colecovision with the game Smurf. We were so excited! I can't tell you how many hours we
spent playing. A little north of a month or so later we bought Donkey Kong, and Turbo if memory serves.

Much to our chagrin, our babysitter, friends from school, even my father for crying out loud liked playing it! lol This cut into my brother's and my game time. I know that we soon bought a couple more games, but for the life of me, I can't recall exactly which ones. I think Carnival was one.

We never shut up telling everyone how awesome the console was until we got our next one. The nes. Just made the Coleco look so inferior. Now look at at today's consoles and compare them to the nes in graphics.

the very first console that I played was NES. I remember the first 2 games were Duck Hunt & Kung-Fu. I didn't own that console until my brother ditched it. I was careless as well as it was not working after 1 year usage.
