Irrational Games is changing completely

Quote:
"I am winding down Irrational Games as you know it," wrote co-founder Ken Levine in a post that comes as an utter shock. "I'll be starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor at Take-Two. That is going to mean parting ways with all but about fifteen members of the Irrational team."

Continuing, he said "Seventeen years is a long time to do any job, even the best one ... While Im deeply proud of what weve accomplished together, my passion has turned to making a different kind of game than weve done before. To meet the challenge ahead, I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers."

Although a "classical startup model" was considered, Levine and what's left of Irrational will stay with publisher Take-Two for this venture. Their goal? "To make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable. To foster the most direct relationship with our fans possible, we will focus exclusively on content delivered digitally." The future of BioShock is now in 2K's hands.

"There's no great way to lay people off, and our first concern is to make sure that the people who are leaving have as much support as we can give them during this transition," explained Levine. "Other Take-Two studios will be on hand to discuss opportunities within the company, and we'll be hosting a recruiting day where well be giving third-party studios and publishers a chance to hold interviews with departing Irrational staff." Bittersweet news of the freakin' month.

Not sure how to take this news, as the Bioshock series was one of my favorites of the last gen.

Well. I really wish well for those laid off. Say what you will about the quality of the Bioshock games, but those developers are really talented. It'd be great if Naughty Dog, or even Retro could pick them up for their teams.

As for Levine, I don't really give a shit about him.

Levine is such an arse hole. Oh sure, we're going to make at least 5 Bioshock games, including one on the Vita! What a load of crap. If the Bioshock series doesn't continue because of this incompetent fool I will so research voodoo and create his doll and only God knows what I will do to it.

I've honestly never been this angry about something to do with video games. When another developer picks up Bioshock I wouldn't really want it to be Naughty Dog, I don't think their style would fit in with Bioshock. Someone who can replicate 1 & 2, and make them better is what I'd want. Retro, maybe. Or even the original staff of what used to be Free Radical.

Complete agreement. It's a dick move to announce sequels and then just go "Oh yeah guys, I'm just going to shut down the company and not even bother giving fans any news on what will happen to the franchise LOL".

I honestly hope all of the Irrational Games team get jobs in the gaming industry again and that Levine's choice does not cause many of them to end up being unemployed. Being part of making the Bioshock series should give them a boost though.

I'm both angry and confused.
Why, Levine... Why?

First things that stood out to be was "highly replayable" "smaller" "digitally"

Probably trying to cash in on the arcade/indie game buck.

Most people don't realise that games like candy crush saga and peggle make millions with little to no development time unlike A* mainstream titles like Bioshock.

It kind of sucks though that he's going smaller, after promising more titles, to make more money for less work. It was what I thought when I read it, but it really does seem like a dick move if that's his reason for going smaller, both to the workers he's let go of and fans.

You allude to a point that some have hit on but many choose to ignore. Have AAA mainstream games lost their luster? For every AAA success story like Bioshock, The Last of Us, etc., you have several indie/small dev success stories like Gone Home, Flappy Bird, and Candy Crush Saga. Hell, Portal was that small success story when it came out, too, even if it was produced by Valve.

And Bioshock Infinite wasn't even that groundbreaking. They were trying to reporoduce the lightning-in-the-bottle success of Bioshock and it didn't catch on, in my opinion. If you look at the mainstream titles, you see stagnation in the Call of Duty franchise, more than likely ready to grow even more stagnant with news of a third developer in their development cycle. The FPS genre is reaching the point where it drastically needs to take some new ideas and make sure they stick.
