17 year-old boy killed by police for holding a Wii Remote

Quote:
EUHARLEE, Ga. — A Euharlee police officer opened fire on 17-year-old Christopher Roupe while serving a warrant for probation violation on the child’s father, claiming the boy pointed a gun at her.

But when neighbors ran up the home, they instead found a Wii remote in the boy’s dead hands.

According to the attorney for the family, Cole Law, “The eyewitnesses on the scene clearly state that he had a Wii controller in his hand. He heard a knock at the door. He asked who it was, there was no response so he opened the door and upon opening the door he was immediately shot in the chest.”

The victim, a student at Woodland High School, aspired to join the Marines and participated in his school’s ROTC program.

The officer responsible for the shooting is currently on administrative leave.

How much longer will Americans tolerate the shield of “qualified immunity” that allows police officers to put their lives before those of the citizens they are allegedly sworn to protect? This shooting comes on the heels of the decision to put the eight Los Angeles police officers responsible for firing 103 shots at two women in a pickup truck delivering newspapers back on the streets with no punishment.

According to the district attorney in that case, the police officers “honestly and reasonably believed” that an armed suspect was driving the truck. Just like this police officer probably “honestly and reasonably” believed that this 17-year-old child’s Wii remote was a gun.

So much for “protect and serve.” Welcome to “shoot first, justify later

Stuff like this always makes me more and more afraid of the police

I hope the kid's family receives some sort of justice for this tragedy

Poor guy. It seems rather far fetched that someone could mistake a Wii remote for a gun, unless he had it in one of those gun holders for the remote. I guess that might have made them panic, but surely they should have level headed enough to tell the guy to drop whatever he was holding?
(Sorry for any mistakes I didn't watch the video - just read the article)
The police here don't have guns. I think that makes people feel safer in that the police can't abuse their power in the same way that they seem to there in "shoot first, justify later", but it probably makes their jobs harder. There are firearms squads though of course.

Even if it was in a Wii zapper, only an idiot could mistake that for a real rifle up close.

Hope she has fun living with this the rest of her days. And all she gets is Administrative Leave. What a joke.

I agree, she must have been pretty panicked to confuse it and you can't really enter that line of work if you can't keep calm.
It's gross that they seem to get away with it so easily. It'll probably play on her conscience though if she isn't one of those crazy trigger happy types. Clearly it's her own fault though.

A friend of mine brought up that it's possible it was a black wiimote and a little harder to tell? Also apparently the cop was crying. (I didn't watch the videos, neither the one posted, or the one on the site, but he watched the one on the site I believe) Not that it makes it any better, but I don't think it was done maliciously. (if you know what I mean) Still though, just to pull out your gun and shoot without a warning? No "drop your weapon" or anything? I can see how maybe delivering warrants is stressful and you may never know how someone may react and you have to keep on your toes. Still should have given a warning of some sort though.

Wait wait wait. I just thought. Why was her gun out in her hand in the first place for her to be able to just shoot him when he opened the door? Do cops usually get their guns out "just in case" when they knock on someone's door? If it wasn't out, then she had plenty of time to see if it was a real gun while she pulled her own out and took aim.
