Patches

Would you agree that the ability to patch has made developers lazier?
I certainly miss the days when games functioned properly right out of the box. One of the downsides of the rise of online with gaming is that devs can go "we can patch it later" as an excuse for rushing games out the door.

What are your thoughts?

I agree. Too much "early access" - pay for our crappy game while we (extremely) slowly get it out of alpha and into beta! Oh when will the game be fully released? Er...

Plus there's broken console releases, glitches galore, all that stuff. On a sort of same topic; I also hate kickstarter/crowdfunding/asking for donations so they can complete their game. Back in the day, you had to work hard before you could have any hope of getting your completed game published. Nowadays "devs" make some half-assed concept that looks cool, so idiots with pockets full of money shove it down their throats and they alpha/beta release a game that's cool for a couple of hours (or even less) and then they never finish it. The game "Towns" is a prime example of that.

If you bought a game from a company back in the NES/SNES/PS1/N64 days, and the game had loads of bugs, you wouldn't buy from that developer again. I certainly wouldn't accept a shoddy broken game and gladly purchase any sequels.

On the flipside, I think that patches are a welcome addition. Outside of blatantly unfinished games, patches allow developers to fix problems that they may have not come across even with extensive QA testing. If you came across a game breaking bug or glitch in the older generations, you'd just have to deal with it and hope that the dev puts out a full priced version of the game with the fix, or not buy from them again. But what if you liked that game/series? Patches eliminate that, and are usually free to the consumer.

A more recent example for me: Mario Kart 7. It's a quality game, but the Maka Wuhu glitch online ended up ruining the game for me and I sold it before Nintendo got around to fixing it.

Yeah, really good point. Things like that are just.. why do people do it? I'm sure winning only feels good if it's done fairly.

I think it's good and bad for the industry, it allows for rebalancing certain games like fighting games or multiplayer heavy games like Black Ops or fix bugs that some developers might of missed like with Skyward Sword or Pokemon X/Y.

Unfortunately it also allows developers to be incredibly lazy or easily let publishers force developers to rush buggy products out the door for a quick buck with the thought of fixing it later, like Battlefield 4, MoH Warfighter or Batman Arkham Origins shows

I don't mind patches. Somet things can be uncatchable, like the Skyward Sword glitch or th Maka Wuhu glitch.

But sometimes patches aren't enough for an ultimately broken and rushed game, like my favorite worst game ever, Assassin's Creed 3.

patches are good for me. I find one game freezing all the time after completing one stage after another; e.x: DuckTales Remastered HD from downloadable game. I'm glad there has been a patch to fix it from Capcom.

Don't forget there is a Walking Dead season 1 (physical disc) that totally ruins everything Walking Dead fans. I almost snatched to buy a disc version, but when there is a warning from every major forum to avoid that disc game at all cost. What the hell is in their mind on from Telltales company to release a broken game for gamers ?

Will at least they check the major problems (testing it) before releasing it..
