Are Forums Dying Out Because Of Social Networking?

I have no real opinion either way. Social Networking isn't my cup of tea. I just thought that some of you might find this topic interesting. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts.

Probably. the main reason is facebook groups - they're just like a forum. Take the 4chan format of threads stacking and bumping, apply to facebook, and you have facebook groups.

Appeal dies off a bit, and the people that it appealed to aged. Think about it. Pretty much all of us here are adults now. We grew up without having the internet really be the entity it is today. There is a lot the internet can cater to now. The initial 'wow factor' of what used to be for the prospect of discussing games with a gaming community has likely lessened. Kids today grow up with so many technological advancements and really refined technology for better communicating with other gamers.

Let's take some examples. Growing up, most of us began with nes, snes, genesis, n64, whatever else. What do all these consoles lack? Online. Sure online was eventually implemented in dreamcast, ps2, and xbox, but it was usually dial-up at that point (same goes for computers), and wasn't a conventional means of communicating, where as today it's been refined to technologically cater to the gamers that want to talk to the other gamers while they play. For a kid today, it's much more appealing to play games and talk about games than it is to just go talk about games on a forum.

Further chasing the technological-advancement idea, for most of us the internet was pretty non-existent through most of childhood, and what was there was a slow buggy 'idea' really that just becomes more and more refined. Old internet's main purpose was to create a better mail system and read the news. It wasn't until much later that the idea came out to really talk about games, then some news sites for games came out, and following that, forums to discuss said news and games (that at the time) were offline games that could only be discussed rather than played online. This discussion usually only took place with local friends at schools or what have you. What I'm getting at is the advancement of the 'idea' and the appeal of something 'new'.

Not only that, the internet has branched, and branched, and branched from the simple idea of email, and communication to pretty much be a means of any form of entertainment. Whether it be games, email, social media, videos, you name it. There is no shiny appeal anymore, forums aren't 'new'. Gamers can satisfy their want to discuss games through many, many, many different means. Just depends on what caters to them, and for today's kids, it's not typically writing stuff out and reading about it. It's watching video news, seeing what let's players have to say, playing games online while talking about games, or even just skyping their friends that they normally only see at school, that they now have a simple, free, and easy way of talking to them.

On top of this, forums themselves have branched to endless means, and are still being created today for different specific purposes. A field of gamers divided to very specific forums now. Not only that, but there is comment sections for almost everything. It's no wonder things slow down.

Both take a couple of minutes of my day to use so one isn't going to stop me from using the other.

I sure as heck think so. Was just discussing this with someone else a day ago. It's sad too. I use all the social networks, but vastly prefer gaming forums. Then again the whole interwebs have changed. I joined Facebook shortly after it came out to the crowd, and its a whole LOT different now. In a way I miss the old Facebook too.

The kick to forums though has definitely happened, and if nothing else, it's a great unfortunate happening. Social networking is the new fad.

I was honestly unaware this was happening. I only have a couple gamer friends in real life, so I have always used dedicated gaming forums. I prefer them still.

You don't make a Facebook, like a group/page and think, "Wow. I don't have time for forums any more.", right?

Makes me wonder why this should ever be the case unless you're running the page itself 24/7.

I use to be on Facebook more than either of the forums I'm on but I slowly transitioned to being on here most of the day now. It is now even my home page so I come here right when I open my browser now. I never really got into groups the way I have in this forum. I prefer it here a lot more. I don't think the forum format is really dying, it's just most people join the big name ones because that's what they hear about. I would have never known about this site if Cubey hadn't come to the Natsume forums (which while also a small forum, is on Natsume's site.) and had it linked in his sig and said I should check it out.

So while it may be that smaller forums are dying, I don't think it's because of social networking, more of people find the big forums first and either stay there, or are turned off by forums all together. I know I almost was when I joined IGN. I thought that maybe all forums were like that, lots of people and just very aloof is you know what I mean? Luckily I found a smaller forum, and enjoyed it much more.

A lot of the smaller ones probably are, but then again, this is the only forum I really check. I never really used them before.
