Why is it OK to like comic book movies, but apparently bad to like comics?

Not that a give a flying squirrel shit what other people think of me, but it bothers me when it's OK to like a movie based on a comic book, but knowing things about the source material apparently makes you a basement sweller. It's pretty ridiculous. It kind of started with X-Men, though to a lesser extent since the cartoons were fairly comic accurate and most people were familiar with them. But then we have things like Iron Man. Before the Iron Man movie, no one who wasn't into comics new who Iron Man was. They didn't care. In fact, even in the comic world he was a fairly unpopular character. After the movie, he became insanely popular, and the movie was good so don't have any real problem with that, but if you star bringing up differences between modern movie Stark and classic comic book Stark, all of a sudden it's not cool anymore. Same thing with the Avengers. And just you ****ing wait for Guardians of the Galaxy to come out in the fall - all of a sudden everyone is going to think they know who Rocket Raccoon is.

Comic Books have always held that stigma similar to video games before the Wii era. Thos is why so many comic book movies are going out of their way to be dark and edgy now. They were not really taken seriously until Iron Man/The Dark Knight showed casual audiences that comic book movies could be more than just colorful campy cheese-fests with black-and-white characters. They could be dark and have mature thought provoking themes and characters--just like comic books can.

Casuals just don't know that comics have also matured and are more than just panels of cheesy dudes in spandex spouting one liners. Not to sound hipster or anything but it is annoying when these bandwagon jumpers pretend to be experts on the lore when the movies are the only medium they follow the franchise through. But, if more fans means more dollars to support more movies...so be it I suppose.

One of the most concise ways of putting it.

I've never really come across anyone that's thought badly of others for reading them. But then again, I don't really read comics in public and friends I've had have never really bothered to mock me for it.
Heaven forbid I wear a Pikachu hat to college though. There are two kinds of people; those who say "Ooh! I like your hat" and those who follow me with chants of "pikapikaa pikachuuu" or just s******. It doesn't bother me.

It's not something that just started recently. There has been a stigma for reading comic books since World War II. Sadly, those who read or collect comic books "violate" social norms established in the Western culture. Reading comic books and collecting them as children is considered "normal" but when it transcends into the adult realm, even though its completely harmless, society dictates that reading comic books is not appropriate for the age. Movie going, however, is "accepted" in society and typically viewed in a more positive light. It's a social norm to go to the movies, even if its about comic book heroes.

Also, people who read comics are negatively stereotyped. For some reason, the idea of a person who lives in their parent's basement without a job or a kid who doesn't have many friends and prefers to spend time reading comic book alone comes to mind when people think of comic fans. It's really depressing when you think about it, because many people who enjoy comics don't fall into any of those categories! In fact, some of the world's most successful people like comics. These stereotypes though have carried over into our society to be a sort of "truth" or you could even argue dogma. It's sad how society has evolved to that point.

Social Psychology offers a lot of theories about these types of things.
