Nintendo to skip E3 press conference, hosts Super Smash Bros. tourney instead

Super Smash Bros.

Nintendo's looking to smash up E3.

While Wii U sales languish and fans wonder where the big games are for the system, Nintendo has announced that it will once again bypass the traditional E3 press conference circuit, instead hosting its own 'digital event' that will be broadcast directly to fans on Tuesday June 10 at 9:00 am, PST.

“We demonstrated last year that we are never afraid to reinvent a proven tactic or to break completely new ground if we believe it will provide the best experience for our fans, followers and partners,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s president and chief operating officer.

While no one can fault the company for trying to stand out, last year's similar efforts were largely considered a failure. The 2013 Nintendo E3 Direct announcing new titles ran into problems.

Many of the people attending E3 couldn't view it due to Internet congestion in the downtown area, and with Xbox One and PS4 news grabbing headlines, it was largely lost on the broader audience.

Ultimately, though, Nintendo seems less interested in using E3 as a platform to announce new games and more as a promotional vehicle for its upcoming title Super Smash Bros.

The company plans to invite 16 players to the Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles to compete in a Super Smash Bros. tournament on the Wii U.

Nintendo will again team up with Best Buy to let fans play Super Smash Bros. in select stores nationwide, and the company also plans to live stream throughout E3 showing off new games and the activity at its booth.

It's a much different approach to things than Sony and Microsoft generally take at E3, which is marked by enormous press conferences and big, showy displays at their booths.

Last year, however, Nintendo was seen as an afterthought at E3, with its competitors grabbing the spotlight with their new consoles and Nintendo's lack of imminent, must-have games for its console.

The alternative approach is likely to save Nintendo marketing dollars, but the big fear for the company is whether it's preaching to the choir, talking only to die-hard fans instead of expanding its potential customer base.

The title should be changed. You act like it was replaced by the tournament
