Xbox One to launch in China this year

http://news.yahoo.com/xbox-one-launc...152724905.html

Microsoft's latest console, the Xbox One, is being readied for a September launch in China.

"In China there are over half a billion gamers," said one of Microsoft's corporate VPs, Yusuf Medhi, as part of a promotional video prepared for the announcement.

"The opportunity to create global and locally created content to delight millions and millions of gaming families everywhere is something that we're really passionate about."

The annoncement coincided with China's Golden Week holiday period, starting on May 1.

Microsoft's Chinese partner Shanghai Media Group, whose subsidiary BesTV forged an agreement with Microsoft in September 2013, will be heading up the regional push.

A SMG Senior VP, Zhang Dazhong, complimented Medhi's approach by stating his own belief that "all families" will love the Xbox One. "Let's go, Xbox! China is waiting for you," he concluded.

The joint venture is faced with breaking into a market primarily occupied with PC gaming, while smartphones and tablets have become a considerable force.

It's a preference that Medhi himself conceded to as part of Microsoft's statement to the press -- "gamers in China have shown they love gaming -- mostly on PC, mobile and online," he noted -- and so Microsoft and SMG are positioning the Xbox One as the face of "a new generation of entertainment experiences" and "the first system of its kind" to launch domestically.

The immediate comparison is with Sony's PlayStation 4, which holds a slight technological advantage and, in the United States, retails for $100 less (though without the XBO's voice and gesture controlled Kinect sensor).

Regionally, it enjoyed late 2013 and early 2014 launches in Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines, alongside other territories across Europe, Oceania, and North and South America -- but as of yet there is no date for the PS4's distribution in mainland China.

The Xbox One launched in November 2013 to a more limited 13 markets: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States and New Zealand.

Some territories originally planned for inclusion last year -- Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland -- await their 2014 introduction to Microsoft's new machine.

"It's a good thing Microsoft is rolling in cash, because they've just made announcement of a plan that's going to cost them dearly. Of course no one reporting on this is any wiser to the blunder than Microsoft, so here are my Top 5 reasons why Xbox One will fail in China:

1. Can't sell sand at the beach. Xbox One, PS4 (and all previous generations of consoles) are ALREADY IN CHINA. There is NO effective ban. Go to Taobao (www.taobao.com) and punch in "Xbox One" or "PS4." You will find (as will Chinese consumers) consoles and games available for next-day shipping to your doorstep in China.

2. The set-top box market is ALREADY SATURATED. "Set-top box" is the #1 selling point of the Xbox One in announcements related to the China launch - with BestTV as their local partner. XiaoMi and other local brands already control this business and offer better, cheaper boxes built atop Android-powered dedicated devices. Oh, then there's the fact that 99% of streaming content is consumed on mobile devices or PCs.

3. Piracy. If you've not seen it in China, you've not seen anything. It's massive, awe-inspiring, and will poke giant holes in even the best digital content plans.

4. Cultural/audience disconnect. The target market of kids/young-adults from middle-class/wealthy families don't have free time to spend on console games (or TV/movies). Between the ages of 3~22 years of age they are heads-down with study, school, and extra-curricular activities that will increase their chances of competing successfully against others in the super-hot Chinese job market. Those that aren't studying don't have money to spend on a console.

5. Censorship and restrictions on content. Any console shipped out of the Shanghai FTZ will be unable to play any games other than those approved by the Ministry of Culture (and other media oversight bureaus). That means content for the device will be limited and inferior to what could be had by purchasing a black-market console on Taobao. Chinese consumers are wise to hardware/software restrictions and prefer to purchase "rooted" devices whenever such restrictions are put in place. Back to point #1 and #3."

Got to agree with that, especially for how expensive consoles are now. I do feel sorry for them though, it must suck spending most of your waking moments studying while you're still a kid.
