RUMOR: Call of Duty 2014 will be set during WWI with the subtitle "Patriots"

This rumor is circulating heavily around the web but has yet to be officially comfirmed by Activision.

Quote:

By Patrick Toworfe, Gamer Headlines.com

Of all the settings you’d expect, you might not have seen this coming. New reports from the source*Bubble News*suggest that the new Call of Duty game,*codenamed ‘BlackSmith’, will actually be called ‘Call of Duty: Patriots’ and Smith Black will be one of the game’s main characters. The game will be set in a fictional version of World War 1 and will contain some fantasy elements, such as a character from a previous Call of Duty title appearing in an alternate reality. Could this be the first Call of Duty to fully embrace sci-fi or time travel?

The report from Bubble News continues by mentioning that the game will have both singleplayer and multiplayer modes as usual, but the singleplayer will be playable by co-op as well, but only online and not through splitscreen. The game’s campaign will apparently only last 6 hours however there will also be 2 sub-campaigns that can be played.

The game is rumored to be launching on November 14, which is the usual launch window for COD games. It will also be next gen only, for Xbox One, PS4 and PC, but not for Xbox 360 or PS3*as previously thought. It also won’t be releasing for Wii U. The report mentions that Sledgehammer is planning this to be a 3 part series, meaning there will be sequels in the future.

This is a lot of very surprising news, what do you make of this new information about Call of Duty?

It had me at WWI then I remembered Sledgehammer was making it(and I disliked MW3). Also would be disappointed if it doesn't show up on the 360

You know what? I don't care which team is making it. The fact is, WW1 is vastly under-represented in video games. I would play it, no doubt.

From certain standpoints, I can see WHY WW I is underrepresented in media. Doesn't make it right, but I can see the lack of interest as compared to WW II or even Vietnam.

And yeah it's the same CoD no matter what label is stuck on it or who makes it.

Well now that I think about it.. maybe it'll end up being great to due restrictions since it's WW1, so they'll have to be a bit creative in development...

To be fair, I am sure Activision and the teams are aware of gamers feeling that it's the "same game over and over", and to their credit, it does feel like they're trying. Black Ops II and Ghosts were significant departures, for better or worse. How can they change it significantly enough without changing the essence of the franchise?

When a franchise makes big changes, the fans dislike it and say the franchise has lost its identity.
When it maintains its roots, they talk about it getting stale.
Where is the middle ground?

Anyways, with that said I also did not care at all for Modern Warfare 3 so I am weary due to Sledgehammer being at the helm, assuming they use the Infinity Ward style.

Personally I'm liking the idea of 3 developers releasing the game. While it may seem like overkill to have three developers working on one annual series, it also means it gives each developer 3 years to work on the game, which should give them more time to take the franchise to new places. I haven't played Ghost or BlOps II yet, but at, at least with Treyarch's games, they're at least trying to shake things up(that and I love that they added branching paths for BlOps II). Hopefully 3 years will give them room to change

That said, it looks like we'll find out if this rumor is true this Sunday

For most shooters the main problem I have is just the gun balance. There's always that one gun that everyone uses. If you don't use it, you're at a disadvantage. It's really annoying. Most of the time in shooters it ends up being some kind of shotgun. For CoD it's always a new gun but I think only MW2 was it an actual shotgun.. but I never played blops2/ghosts so I can't say for sure it never came back.

I think it's actually getting slightly worse in general with a bunch of free to play games that have pay to win guns.
