Raspberry Pi SNES case mod

Hi all

I've finished building my Raspberry Pi and Retrode into the housing of a dead SNES. Apart from the startup time, which I'm working on reducing, it's just like using a real SNES as you still plug the carts in. The advantage of this is that I can play in much higher quality on my 90" projector screen, and can also play imports without having to mod a real SNES and risk killing it.

Photos and a video are here:

Enjoy

Sounds pretty awesome. I wish I was good at stuff like that, it sounds like such a fun hobby.

Thanks! It is a lot of fun. And it's not that hard really. The hardware side is just about fitting everything in the case. I had quite a bit of help on the software side from the Arch Linux Arm and Raspberry Pi forums, as my Linux was a bit rusty

The Lego was the easiest way I could find to support the retrode, and it works surprisingly well! It stays perfectly aligned to the slot and doesn't move inside the snes case at all. You can push down hard enough to plug in the cart and the platform stays rock solid.

It runs ARM builds of Linux (and some other OSs). There is quite a large library of precompiled software for the ARM flavours of Linux, but some stuff you need to compile from source. There are quite a few emulators out there including a version of snes9x which is optimised to run on the Pi (PiSNES). You can run the prebuilt binary of this easily, but I chose to compile a modified version which enables 2nd player keyboard controls and a few other change I made to the original PiSNES source code.
