Game Industry Slowing Down?

Quote:
By Steven Musil,
CNET Thu Sep 11, 10:50 PM ET

Sales of video game software and hardware in the U.S. rose 9 percent in August to $1.08 billion, the smallest monthly increase in more than two years, according to data released Thursday by market researcher NPD Group.
Hardware sales were up 3 percent to $395 million lead by handheld Nintendo DS, which sold 518,300 units, Nintendo's Wii came in second with 453,000 unit sales, and Microsoft's Xbox 360 claimed the third spot with 195,200 unit sales.

Software sales were up 13 percent to nearly $551 million, lead by
Electronic Arts' Madden NFL 09 and Nintendo's Wii Fit and Mario Kart. Sales of accessories rose 13 percent to $137 million.
The video game industry has weathered the economic downturn better than most industries, but August's sales increase is the first rise below 10 percent in 27 months, NPD analyst Anita Frazier said. However, she said projections for 2008 are still looking strong overall.

"Despite smaller growth this month, the industry is up 32 percent year-to-date and remains on target to achieve annual revenues in the range of $22 billion to $24 billion," Frazier said in a statement.
Sounds like the gaming industry is in need of a "lift".

The gaming industry could try out some new ideas. It could also have something to do with the economy.

Games are being produced like they used too. Economy probably has something to do with it. Maybe the programmers they are hiring too. Some really stupid waste of time games are being produced lately...Just like alot of crappy ass cars that all look the same..

Like Mario said, the economy probably has something to do with it. A lot of people can't even afford gas to drive to the store...
Unfortunately, as my parents have pointed out plenty of times, Video games aren't a necessity to life. So many people won't be buying video games until the economy starts to do better.

My thoughts as well. I don't see why this is cause of concern?

MsEbol is an unknown quantity at this point

it seems they are kinda stuck on what to create very few new concepts are being release. the same old shotem up or hunt down and kill are the basic formats ... there are a few others games generas being made but i guess there is only so much you can ake to play and some of the newer game are short games 5 to 12 hours long not the old style you have to play up to or even exceed 180 hours to win.

Considering that the world is facing a worlwide recession and that, as you have said, video games aren't a necessity, I think that they should be gratefull that the industry continues to grow... Next year will be quite a harsh one for this kind of industries.
