Nintendo DSi Sells Out in Japan

The November 1st Japanese release of the new Nintendo DSi has been a success. The initial allocation of 200,000 retail units has sold out in four days, with most of the sales coming from pre-orders. TechRadar notes that an additional 100,000 units are set to ship to stores in Japan over the next week or so. The site also notes that eBay is rife with scalpers offering the new DSi for practically double the cost of the Japanese recommended retail price.

Nintendo has yet to announce a firm release date for the Nintendo DSi in territories other than Japan.

I wonder what will happen when the DSi's successor comes out.

Either way, this is good news for Nintendo. But to me, this is an interesting strategy for them. Video game companies don't traditionally make money by selling consoles (I know Nintendo did on the Wii, but Microsoft and Sony both lost money on their console sales); the money is made in software. Nintendo seems to be launching new hardware that will still be compatible (so far) with the old DS Lite software, with at least one exception. Unless they plan to make lots of money with their DS Shop Channel (or whatever they plan to call it) I'm at a loss as to why they would release this console now, instead of waiting and improving the video quality and storage capacity of the handheld, thus boosting software potential.

Well it's simple really, if they upgraded it all now, they'd still "sell out", but if they just add the new features to it and sell so many, they can upgrade it later, put that on the shelves and sell the same amount as before, making double the profit.

Yes, but they hardly make any money at all on hardware sales. So if they're going for profit alone, this is actually a bad move for them.
