Smoking in public places

I don't know if other cities you live in have banned it or is a topic of discussion in your area, but banning the smokeing of cigarettes has come up in the Milwaukee area and will most likely get passed
What is your view? Should smokeing in public places(resturants, bars, etc) be banned?

Both of my parents are smokers, so i live in a house with 2nd hand smoke. I know there stance on banning, and there against it.

You can make the argument 2 ways
Banning:
-Positives-
-2nd hand smoke become less of an issue, or not one at all if you don't live with a smoker.
-Freedom, people don't have to breathe in the smoke.

-cons-
-Bigger government telling us what we can, and can't do
-Freedom, you should be able to smoke where you want

I do have to breathe in smoke while i'm home, but i don't think it should be banned in public places, due to the cons i listed.

In bars, it makes no sense. They'll lose alot of there customers because a large percent who smoke go to bars.
Resturants can have a smokeing and Non-smokeing section.

I believe it should be banned. Second-hand smoke is more dangerous than smoking from the cigarette. I don't care about their freedoms, because they can hold off until they get home to light up. It's called SELF-CONTROL.

I think smoking should stay banned where it is banned and become banned in public areas where it's not already banned. Second hand smoke is dangerous and second hand smoke increases the chance of cancer and second hand smoke still shortens a person's lifespan as well as first hand smoke. By smoking in public, it takes the rights of those who do not want to have anything to do with smoking away.

hmm.... im not sure...

... NORMALLY id feel compelled to say "hey stupids, if you wanna gargle tar, go ahead, but IM not gonna be the one to have to pay for it.."..

... but... my girlfriends father is a heavy smoker.. i wouldnt want her to have to endure more idiot-smoke...

.... the cons in that situation arent too much cons.. bigger government=better.... and personal freedom is limited when it inflicts on OTHERS' freedom.. the cons that -I- see is that those who live with smokers have to suffer more...

... lol.. maybe we can solve this issue more easily?... how about we make it so that if you ever start smoking, then you have signed a contract (upon the first puff.. no signature needed) saying "if i ever get cancer of any kind, then i must pay 500 million dollars for treatment.. otherwise, hospitals are allowed to deny treatment"...
that way stupid people die, and the government gets more money...

....
well also use the marijuana that should be lagalized to at least ensure them a PAINLESS death... (lol@references)

The ban has been in place here in Illinois for about a year now. Not too many people seem to be pissed off about it.
Personally, I think it's a great idea.
If people want to kill themselves (and their kids) in the privacy of their own homes, go for it. But going to a public restaurant doesn't mean they have to cater to everyone, they only have to cater to people's safety.
Here's an analogy I thought of...If somebody likes to walk around naked at home, that doesn't mean they should expect to go to a public place (restaurant, mall, bar, etc.) and decide it's ok to do there. It could offend people, so that's why we restrict it to your own home.
Except, second hand nudity can't give you cancer. Cigarettes can.

The only people I have seen get up in arms about the ban are people who frequent bars, and the casinos who were worried they'd lose business. Guess what...the bars are still open, and the casino built little smoking huts outside that were within regulations. Sounds great to me. For once I am able to go to a restaurant or a bowling alley and not come home smelling like an ashtray...

... yeah.. as i was getting to, the thing i mainly disagree with is the safety for the children... if there was a way that the smokers didnt harm their innocent family members, THEN id be all up for it...

I agree...but we can't police people's homes, now can we?
Personally, I wouldn't mind banning cigarettes. They're just stupid....zero benefits, and a huge waste of money. And they make you and everyone you live with smell like sh*t.
But, you're right. People should have the right to kill themselves...just not their kids...

So you pretty much said that i stink... I want my parents to stop smokeing, there going to die at an earlier age. But it is hard to quit (thats what they tell me).

When big government decides to ban smokeing in public places, when does it stop?
In the past alcohol was banned, but people got a hold of it.
Bottom line, its stripping people of there freedoms. I made the argument both ways.

Ofcourse bars will remain open, but are they still as busy? And resturants, a smokeing and non-smokeing areas don't seem out of order.

also... its not stripping them of their freedoms if smoking kills OTHER people.. which it does..

I didn't say you stink. But I dated a girl that lived with just one smoking parent, and she always smelled like smoke, and I smelled like smoke whenever I stayed over for more than an hour...the same with relatives of mine that smoke (many in my family do...luckily my parents didn't)
If they can't quit, then I'm sorry. That's unfortunate. Have they tried the patch/gum? Some people just can't do it...

I don't understand when you say "When big government decides to ban smoking in public places, when does it stop?"
You can still smoke outside. You can still smoke in private residences. You just can't smoke in places where non-smokers can be affected by it and get cancer. And I'm sure you've heard the analogy "Having a smoking section in a restaurant is like having a peeing section in a pool." C'est vrai. A one foot glass partition between you and the booth right next to you won't block smoke that can drift over the entire restaurant.

And you didn't answer my comparison to public nudity. Is that stripping people of their freedom to walk around naked? Or are you harming someone else with your "freedom"?
And people can't drink alcohol in public unless the place has a license. I can't walk into Walgreens and crack open a beer. And there are still places in my state (tobacco stores, hookah bars) where they have a specific tobacco license and people can still smoke inside.

You bring guns to a firing range.
You drink alcohol in a restaurant or bar.
You buy porn in a licensed shop.
And now you smoke in licensed, designated places as well.
And you can do ALL of these things in the privacy of your own home.
I don't see the problem in keeping harmful things away from the general public, with the exception of alcohol, which, for the record, cannot drift through the air and give you cancer.
