Super Mario 64 DS: A remake of a moustached god
Once again, you, Mario, lured by the temptations of free cake, adventure to Peach's castle with Wario and Luigi in tow. However, this time, you're the damsel in distress! Enter Yoshi, who, happily dozing on the castle's roof, realizes you must do what you do best. You must rescue Mario.
In Super Mario 64 DS, Mario, Luigi and Wario, all trapped inside the castle with Peach, must be rescued from Bowser, who had hidden 150 Power Stars inside the castle. Take a new approach at the timeless classic as you don Yoshi's tounge and tail to save your friends!
As the game goes on, you unlock the plucky plumber trio, and use their unique powers to help attain the Power Stars!
Also, you can now catch pesky bunnies to help unlock minigames, which utilize the touch mechanism to the best of its abilities. These minigames are fun, but are a detract from the real goal. Save Peach, and get the Power Stars.
There are extra "hidden stars", in which you must explore the castle inch by inch to find them. From using the touch screen to walk to throwing Bowser and bombs, old and new mix to create a game that will hog your life from weeks to years.
Good graphics. Very
good graphics. But not the best. They get clunky at times, although Bowser keeps looking better every year. The original was renowned for its graphics, and these graphics are good to, but after nearly 10 years, the change isn't what it could be.
Same storyline, but with an added twist. The whole "Yoshi has to save everyone" aspect adds more flare to the original, but it's pretty much the same. Never really liked Mario plots, but hey, it's the game that makes it.
The added twist of 4 different characters really adds spice, and the minigames are good, but there are some faults.
The controls are really awkward at times. They really don't stack up to the Joy-stick predecessor. The jump is B, which I never really understood seeing it has always been A on other games. And the touch factor is really just annoying in the actual game. Its really annoying when throwing Bowser at bombs.
The sound portrays the right mood, and is really effective when adding to the realism of the game. Probably one of the best of a DS game when pit against most titles.
This game is pretty good. But the control destroys it for me. Shows how 3D games are best suited for the Joy-stick rather than 3D games. The extra characters and minigame sare a nice touch, but I prefer the original. Simplicity. You are Mario and you own Bowser with a Joy-stick. But still, better than Superman 64 DS
