What you will need:
Computer with internet and a DVD burner
USB Keyboard and Mouse
USB Storage Device
Part 1: Choose what linux OS you want.
You can choose from OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, Fedora, Gentoo, Debian, or YDL 5.0 (Sony Build Reccomended)
Now download a PS3 build of any of the above OS' (Links included at bottom) and burn them to a disk (5 GB disks reccomended). Now while you are waiting for it to download, Why don't you do backup all of your game saves?
Part 2: Repartioning and installing the other OS.
So now that you have backed up all your saves and got Linux on a disk, you need to go to Settings>>System Settings>>Format Utility and choose to either save 10 GB for the PS3, or 10 GB for Linux (Reccomended)
After it finishes formatting, put the Linux disc in and go to Settings>>System Settings>>Install Other OS and it will find OtherOS.bld and click install
Part 3: Installing Linux
Go to Settings>>System Setting>>Default System and click Other OS.
When you get in to the Command line Linux shell, plug in your Keyboard and Mouse. Eject the Linux disc and re-insert it. The linux shell should recognize it. Once it tells the disk info and shows "Kboot:" type "Install" to install or "Test" to test Linux.
Part 4: Configuring & Installing
Once you click "Install" it will bring you to a linux window. Enter all of your settings and information, after you enter it all, it will show a window that promts you to install. Click "Install" and it will take around 40 minutes. And then you have Linux! To go back to the PS3, go to the Command shell and type boot-game-os if it does not boot the ps3, hold the power button down until it turns red, and then turn it back on by holding the power button until the 2nd beep.
To go back to Linux go back to System settings and change the default system.
Sometimes windows can be big during configuration on an SDTV so if you have problems PM me and I can help. Also, Some Linux OS' don't support WiFi. PM me and I will help you add support. If you have any other problems, Post them here, or PM me and I will respond ASAP.
If you can't see the PS3 file in the links, just get the PPC
And like a newborn baby
Don't be afraid to crawl
And remember when you walk
Sometimes we fall...so
Fall on Jesus
Fall on Jesus
Fall on Jesus and live!

Bump: Just wanted to add some things.
If you install Ubuntu, DO NOT install Gutsy because it is unsupported meaning the repository is gone and you can't use apt-get. I recommend getting Feisty Fawn since it is stable, and will be updating the longest.
I will now be having updates in this thread with apps, games, tricks, and tutorials, and users can posts somes apps, tricks, games, and tutorials aswell.
I will post how to use emulators, and some tricks on PS3 Linux by the end of the week.
