Ending of Super Metroid (Metroids extinct?)

What are the Metroids at the end of Super Metroid? Weren't all of the Metroids except the hatchling supposed to be defeated?

I know Metroids are supposed to reproduce asexually, which means they wouldn't need a mate, but does that mean it's possible the hatchling actually spawned the Metroids we see in Metroid Fusion?

No, that couldn't be, because Super Metroid takes place just moments after Metroid II.

The Galactic Federation has Metroids, unless all the Metroids they had were on the research station that Samus destroyed in Fusion. so does anyone want to speculate about the state of the race now?

No doubt there are other research facilities on other planets both Pirate, and Galactic Federation.

I think if the Space Pirates had Metroid research facilities, the GF would know about it and send Samus to destroy them. While possible, it's more likely the GF has Metroids than the SP.

If Metroids do live on, I'd rather see them in the hands of the GF, which would bring up some serious questions as to what their intentions really are.

if there is a Metroid 5, i expect Samus to somehow unite with them thanks to her new DNA. i've always seen metroids as a sort of tool created by the Chozo who's real purpose is still unknown, and have simply been used for all the wrong things thanks to the Space Pirates, and perhaps even the Galactic Federation now.

i think it would be really awesome if Samus and the metroids somehow teamed up to take on the corrupt Federation. probably won't go that route, but it would be cool.

I'd be completely shocked if a highly advanced civilization like the Chozo had any need whatsoever for metroids. Those little buggers are powerful, but very risky. I'm 99% certain the Chozo saw this and just looked away.

the Chozo created the metroids. i'm sure they had a reason to do so, even if it hasn't been disclosed in the games.

All I've gathered so far is that they began breeding metroids to deal with the x-parasites. Only Metroid Fusion offers this clue. x_X

Other than that, were still very much in the dark about the true purpose of the metroids. Since the Chozo created them, don't you think they'd go out of their way to protect them a little better? They're close to, if not already, being extinct! If those metroids served some grand purpose, logic says the Chozo would take steps to ensure their survival and to create measures to ensure no one else had access to the creatures. These are things the Chozo never did here. It's almost like they made metroids as some sort of twisted joke just to get a few lulz out of the ensuing chaos.

good point, but don't forget that the Chozo are practically extinct themselves. perhaps their grand plans never got the chance to be realized.

or if the metroids' only purpose really is to combat the X parasites, then perhaps the Chozo simply didn't forsee the metroids misuse and eradication. this is doubtful since the Chozo have otherwise been known to prophesize such events correctly, but it's a possibility i suppose.
